Thecus N299 enclosure, more than 1TB?

I was looking to get an N299 enclosure for storing media etc but was wondering if it is possible to have more than 1tb of storage by a firmware flash or similar?

Either that or it's likely to be a new pc for storage

    Daer Sir,

Due to hardware limiation the N299 support up to 500GB HDD only, thus we afraid N299 can't afford the HDD more than 500GB, we could choose N3200 or above model for higher HDD capacity.

    Hi,
as Yvon should know the 500 GB might be an official statement but has been proved wrong by practical experiences. I don't know what size might work reliably but at least my two 750 GB Samsung Spinpoint F1 disks worked without any problems (disregarding the problems of the N299 in general like excessive power assumption of the bios battery causing power up button not working etc.) until I switched to another NAS with the performance to justify a GB ethernet port, active support etc. Perhaps have a look for experiences with even larger disks; I think I have read about different people using 1 TB WD10EACS or WD10EADS.
Of course you better look for another product that is not as dead as the N299 and has more performance and features to be expected (in case of the N299 even promises but never fulfilled like HD spindown).

    Bye
    Peter

It definitely works .... I'm using Hitachi 1TB drive (HDT721010SLA360) with no problem.

I'm using 2drive Seagate 1TB drive (ST31000340AS) with no proble with firmware V1.00.28 , but I want to put the firmware 1.00.31beta2 to solve some problems with multimedia reader, with ps3 . Any tested this firmware?

Re: Thecus N299 enclosure, more than 1TB?

I'm using the latest 1.00.37. I'm not sure how to tell if it is working properly. Basically standard NAS function is OK but I've had not much success in using external USB devices. Almost all my external USB flash (except one) and USB HDD are not readable by the N299 (it recognize the device but just can't use it). It's the same with 1.00.28. I also have no luck to use it as print server. Is it just my problem or it's a generic problem?

I'm only using 1 internal 1TB drive right now (it's put in the drive 2 position). Does that make the device behave differently? I'm not sure if I should commit another drive in this box. If I put in another drive, will it use the drive automatically (JBOD or RAID 1)?

    Thanks,

    I'm using the latest firmware too with 2 X 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1's (HD103UJ) in RAID 0.

Been using for just over 1 year and so far so good (apart from not working with PS3).

    Here it is: http://www.thecus.com/Downloads/beta/

Running 1.00.41 here and working fine. Still my opinion is: N299 is a very crappy product with crappy support.
