Wrote a Debian installer image out to it with Rufus and now it appears as a "Phison USB Disk 50X PMAP" of capacity 0MB
Windows and Linux refuse to format.
Any way to reflash it or software repair it before RMA?

Have you tried the Phison MPALL software tools? It's what the factory use to configure the USB memory controller.
