Re: ati 3870 to hot!! help
If you download a program called ATITool you can use it to control the fanspeed. There should be some setting in the ATI software to speed it up though

atitool fan control - Google Search
Re: ati 3870 to hot!! help
I doubt it's the 3870 causing your machine to turn off, because it simply can't. You'll either get a lock-up or a bluescreen afaik. These cards can take over 100C fine, confirmed by the manufacturers. I'd look into problems with your CPU cooling tbh, its more than likely that an option is set in the BIOS to turn the machine off when the CPU temp gets to a certain degrees.
Anyhow, Rivatuner can sort out fan speed for you.
I'm currently using a 3850 Pro - 63C idle, 93C load.
If I force a fan speed of 50%, it sits at 54C idle and hits about 73C load at 730/2000.

thanks that helps:rolleyes: just one more thing that will prob leed to more things? how do i look or adjust the cpu BIOS ?:surrender: it does crash well before i hit 70oc in the game?
Re: ati 3870 to hot!! help
Yes, something like this could well be caused by CPU temps. Especially if the symptoms are that the machine simply turns off, rather than gives up any error messages + other wierd behaviour.
When your computer starts up, press either the delete key, or F2 (can depend on the make of BIOS). From in there you should have a section typically described as; "Health Monitor" or "System Health". In there you should find the shutdown temp option - as well as a current temperature reading (usually :) ).
Re: ati 3870 to hot!! help
Having a similar problem, but I'll post about it in the appropriate forum.
Re: ati 3870 to hot!! help
As already said, i don't think it is your GC causing the shut down. I use rivatuner to adjust my fan speeds as ATI tool seems not to work all the time with vista. My idle temps at default are 40 idle 80 load, and fan speed @60% idle is 32 and 55 load :)
