A old donkey core2duo e6300, with a 8600gt. Im tempted to just get a 6950 and clock the old c2d up a lot.

Just fancy getting back into pc gaming as the 360 is showing its age. Only game i'd be doing it for is bf3 really. It plays at 800x600 atm so i stuck with the 360 version for now lol.

    welcome back

Even a C2D would be a bit of a hindrance with BF3, what motherboard is it in?

    Re: You last visited: 20-10-2008

I have the same CPU oc to 2.4 GHz (from 1.86 GHz) and it can barely keep up with any new titles let alone BF3, getting a new GPU such as the 6950 would obviously improve things but unless you get a new CPU you would feel somehow cheated of your investment.

Chances are the best you could install in your current motherboard is Quad Core but as Biscuit said you should tell us the remaining system specs such as Motherboard, Power supply and ram.

Strange, as I have done the very same thing... almost.

    I have a C2D E4300, which I've left alone. But I did have a Zotac 8800GT.
After getting Skyrim for my birthday on PC (not Xbox ), I found that playing it on less than medium settings was getting old.. fast. So I bought a Palit GTX460 768MB for on ebay for £65. Sold my 8800GT for £30. MASSIVE graphical upgrade for £35!! I play on High with FXAA enabled. Strewth!!

Sometimes a simple GFX upgrade is all you need. I've found my C2D seems to perform the same whether it's running at stock 1.8GHz or o/c to 3GHz. Shop around and you might find a splendid bargain too

    Re: You last visited: 20-10-2008

I would pick up a second hand C2Q and overclock that. Add in a mid-high end GPU such as a 7870 or a GTX670 (when they come along) and your golden.

Assmuning your PSU and cooling is up to the job of course.

Is there a specific budget for the upgrade?

Just noticed i can put a c2q in there so im going to have a look on ebay. No real budget just something to tinker with. I will only play tf2 which runs fine now and hope to properly play bf3 that i bought just cause it was £12 lol

    Re: You last visited: 20-10-2008

    Just a note of caution...
A Core2Quad certainly could be an upgrade option, however be aware that you could get the following:
    Cheap H61 motherboard
    2 x 2GB of DDR3 RAM
    Cheap 'Sandy Bridge' CPU
All for around £120. And that's before selling the current setup.

I'm not saying that you should do the above, or that a cheap Sandy Bridge CPU would beat a C2Q, but that would give you a whole new pathway...

What I am saying is that only get a C2Q if its a real bargain, else you might be better investing your money elsewhere. I've just had a very quick glance at fleabay, a Q6600 at around £50 might be a bargain, but closer to £85 would not (in my opinion).
