Hangs on rebooting

My machine has worked well for the last year until recently when us robotics router failed. upon using standby usb adsl modem computer now hangs when rebooted or started up from standby or hibernate. Ihave wiped drive using Maxtor ISO disk and written 0s to the drive, I have run every kind of diagnostic tool I can get my hands on.

When the machine hangs, if left for 5 mins or so it then fires up and opens any programs one might have clicked on. Any ideas please!
