Sorry dont know what the problem might be here. Could you post your setup? CPU, MOBO, make, number and size of dimms? Are you running 2 different brands of memory?

its a pentium two with a single stick of 128mg memory only the one in there

Does the comp boot fine after you press F1 ??

Does the Comp show any signs of instability eg under a heavy load does the ram crap out?

Is the ram set to 'By SPD' or 'auto' in bios? Does a dell bios even let you make those kinds of adjustmetns?

Has it always done this or just recently and did you make any changes?

What speed is the memory? 66mhz or 100 mhz??

Cos your problem is:

DIMMs do not meet the Intel® SPD 1.2 specification or 66-MHz DIMMs are installed.

Did you put the RAM in after as an upgrade? or is it as-is from the factory, cos ur ram
is prolly 66mhz in a 100mhz board

no it boots fine (after pressing f1)and i know it is pc100 as it says this on the ram and i have never updated it

it is second hand (my sis' pc) and its always done this

Sorry i cant help further Daymonkey, but i would suggest that Dell used a Dimm that doesnt match the spd 1.2 spec..... it's the only thing that suggests itself to me...

The only thing i can suggest is having a root in the bios and try turning off the self check at the beginning - might stop the error message.

Can anyone else pick up the ball ?

Think you've hit the nail on the head funnelhead - have a look at this Dell Error listing which lists that as the answer.

If it's an old system it may well have been manufatured at around the time of the changeover from PC66 to PC100 where SPD's were rather inconsistent, or in the case of PC66, non-existent.

I suspect the only way to get rid of it completely would be to replace the DIMM.

It's possible you may have a BIOS option to suppress error messages though - in most BIOSes the option is Halt On: and you can toggle a number of error conditions. If it's there, you may be able to get round the error by setting it to "none" or whatever the equivalent is.

there is not bios option and i have replaced the dimm(stck of 128meg pc100) but the message still shows

Do you know the replacement stick has good SPD info? Try checking the SPD info on the sticks with CPU-Z (last page has a 'save results' tab which includes the SPD info).

If they check out OK, all I can suggest is try updating the BIOS in the hope that it's a BIOS issue. Failing that, I personally am out of ideas

This what dell says. If you have not updated then you need new memory, because one or more are faulty.
