    Were can I get a USB3 header?

Situation as follows, motherboard has 2x usb2 headers and 1x usb3 header
Case has 4x usb2 front ports (using up the 2 headers) card reader also needs a usb2 header.

I've found one of these that would work http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motherboard-.../dp/B00H8V2DD6
However a usb3 header has usb2 pins on it, so if I can find a source of just a usb3 19pin female connector I could just rewire the card reader for usb3, rather than have an additional connector inside the case.

Anyone know where I can get one?

I *think* you're after something like this, right?
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=49&subcat=423
    Has a 19-pin USB3 header on it.

    I have this one:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=49&subcat=423
However, I only have USB3 ports connected to it.

I'd guess you won't receive USB3 speeds on the card reader, due to the wiring... but I could be (and hope I am) wrong...!

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

No that's not what I'm after, I have a usb3 header, sorry the title might be misleading.
What I want is just the usb3 19pin female connector, the bit that plugs into the motherboard header.

If you look at my amazon link that's a female connector to a usb2 famale connector with some double ended male pins in it to make a usb2 male connector.

basically I plan on removing the female usb2 connector from the card reader and rewiring it to a usb3 female connector so I can plug it into the usb3 motherboard header with out the need for the extra adaptor.

Basically the motherboard (Asus A88XM-A FM2+) has two usb2 headers and one usb3 header, I need three usb2 headers.

    here's the usb pinout
On the usb3 the IntA are the data lines for usb2 and the Vbus are the +5v, so you can convert a usb2 header to be compatible with a usb3 header (it'll not work at usb3 speed)
by getting just a usb3 female connector and wireing up the +5v to the Vbus, the LP's to the IntA's and the ground to any of the ground
I think the NC goes to the ID but I'm not sure and many usb2 skip the NC altogether anyway

It's a bit confusing as both the motherboard plug and socket seem to be called "headers" the only difference is male (with pins) and female (with sockets for pins)

EDIT; I've found this http://www.moddiy.com/products/USB-3...2d-Female.html which is basically what I want, but not in the UK.

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

To me, a header has the pins (ie is Male), a connector is Female and so has holes for the pins

So... You're after a USB3.0 Female connector at one end and a USB2.0 Female connector at the other end...?

If so - Corsair's 400R and 500R cases have a USB3-to-USB2 cable, both with Female connector ends. You get one in the £5 Spare Accessories box:

    http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/corsair...-accessory-box

The USB3 end has twin cables (for two USB ports), but only a single USB2 connector. Could you rewire this to the card reader and still be on USB3, perhaps?

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

No, usb3 female, to usb2 male, so I can plug the usb2 card reader into the usb3 motherboard header and I found one (see my original link), but I'd like to do away with the additional connector cable altogether and just replace the current usb2 female with a usb3 female (it's really not complex to rewire it) but for that I need a usb3 female connector on it's own.
I cannot easily salvage one off something else as they are sealed units and I don't have any spare kicking about.

EDIT: As far as I found the correct terminology is "Pin header" and "Header connector" although the "header" part is any internal connection that is on a pcb

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

I have never seen an internal USB 3.0 cable that had a plug that could be taken apart. They were all molded straight onto the cable. What you are looking for might not exist.

The only way I can see is to buy an internal USB 3.0 extension cable and then use it to outright replace the cable going into your card reader. Cut the plug off the device end of the new cable and wire it into your card reader/put the plug from the old cable onto it.

Side note: Stop creating work for yourself and just buy the adapter that you mentioned in your first post.

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

Could you wire the card reader to a standard external USB male plug and plug it into one of these ports as an internal connection?
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Header-Ports...pin+female+usb

You'd have a spare internal port for future projects then, too...!

Also, is your card reader built into the case or a replaceable 3.5" unit?

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

I was looking at a usb3 card reader as an alternative, however there's an issue.
    compair http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tp...el=AK-ICR-07U3 and http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tp...odel=AK-ICR-14
One is a usb3 card reader with a usb3 port requiring one usb3 header, the other is a usb2 card reader and a usb3 port requireing a usb2 header and a usb3 header.
    the usb3 only cost £24 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Akasa-AK-ICR.../dp/B006CQA7F4 the other cost £10 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Akasa-AK-ICR.../dp/B005DL6UXM

the way that ebay listing says 480Mbps I'm rather wary.

Yes the thing I want does exist http://www.moddiy.com/products/USB-3...2d-Female.html I just cannot find a uk source for it

Yes I could just get the cable I first linked, but it really wouldn't be that much hassle to just remove the contacts from the current usb2 plug and slot them into the correct holes on a usb3 plug, or even cut the wire off and crimp them onto the new contacts.
yes slightly more work than just plugging a cable in, but it would be neater, take 5 minutes.
Maybe it's the modder in me, but I'd much rather do something simple myself then pay for an off the shelf bit.

Looking at it, what I might do is use two usb2 connectors and split the contacts up or even see if I can get some of the individual contact connectors (like you used to get on case front panels)

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

You could always msg the guy on Ebay and ask.

As for looking for the connector, I suppose its all about using the right search terms...

Searching again, this time for 20way IDC, CPC have loads of 20 pin connectors listed. Unfortunately they all appear to be 31mm in width, while you need a 22mm one.

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

    Pretty specific requirements there Pob

It does look like the IDC is a pain to get in the UK. I've just checked the usual bigger electronic suppliers in the UK and I can't find them stocked.

What about using an internal USB 3 extension cable and cutting it? For example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-revi...owViewpoints=1

You might even be in luck with that, because if you read the reviews:
Enter this product - a cable so cheaply insulated and constructed that I was easily able to remove the "plug" (whilst leaving the wires connected and insulated) thus rendering this cable as flexible as internal wiring should be.
You could then cut the cable on both the USB 2 side and this, solder them together (and use a bit of shrink wrap for the pro look).

Although I'd just buy a premade cable and use adapters, but hey ho, modding is fun, right?

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

Yes it does look like I'll just have to by the adaptor cable I originally posted. maybe glue and shrink wrap the mid way connector to hide it
And they wonder why the UK tech base is dying out and we have fewer people beyond the "end user" level, less and less are we a nation of tinkerers.

Why not buy a standard USB3 header -> 2x USB3 sockets and replace two of the USB2 sockets in your case? Hot glue FTW.

Re: Were can I get a USB3 header?

Because all the external front ports are on a pcb, and hot glue on it's own is not solid enough, araldite would be better
On most cheap cases hot glue is used in conjunction with plastic clips.
