Crosswind Landings

OK, so people may or may not have been surprised by the attempted landing of the A320 in bad weather.

So here is a (old) video of the 777 and 747SP landing on a purpose built crosswind landing runway.

Impressive stuff...even more so for the pilots who had the courage to test and push the envelope of what the design engineers state it could do.

I always thought you were suppose to kick out of the sideslip just before you touched down? It looked like they were putting a lot of lateral force on the tires. And there's a lot of tires to change of those big boys! Impressive none-the-less.

In winds as heavy as that you can't "kick out of the sideslip" because as soon as you straighten up the plane will be blown 20ft sideways almost instantly and thus you will miss the runway entireley! Which isn't ideal.

Yes - lots of pressure on the tyres, but they're over engineered to cope. Mind you - hitting the wing on the ground isn't great practice

It looked like the landing gear can rotate sideways so they always face down the runway rather than sideways with the plane?

Quote a lot af planes these days can twist the landing gear to counter some of the sideslip to a certain degree..

That would make sense. Wasn't sure whether the complexity and extra weight added to the UC would have been worth it or not.

I say interesting as I flew into LHR last night from Manchester and it was a pretty scary landing. As we were on final approach it started getting really rough. Then as we got closer we were rocking about all over the place. As we got close enough to see the permiter road going round the airport I could see the runway out of the right side of the plane, we weren't even in line with it! Then all of a sudden, about 20 feet off the ground, he banked sharply to the right and slammed us down at an angle before straightening up.

I don't like flying at the best of times, but that has to be the most terrifying flight I've been on!

I think pilots refer to it as crabbing it takes a lot of skill to land a plane in those conditions.

Here's a good link to some more there's one of a jumbo landing at hong kong old airport which has now been replace by a one out to sea as the old one was hard to land at due to high sky scrapers and montains on each side of the appraoch.

I wonder where that strip is? They must have a natural wind tunnel at work where they test all the planes for crosswind landings. Suprised the pilots can fit in the cockpit, given how big their balls must be....
