did you pay for that software?

curious, following on from http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=62875 - how many of you fork out hundreds of quid for properly licensed MS software?

before voting, remember: under the terms of microsoft's licenses, you are *not* licensed to a) install software on more than 1 compuyer and b) move OEM software from one computer to another (where a different motherboard counts as a new PC for the sake of licensing). if you re-use your OEM windows from PC to PC, that is NOT licensed, so vote as pirate, not oem or retail.

I use a retail MS OS (XP) and licensed Open Office.Org

I've got a copy of Office 2000 knocking around somewhere, but I prefer OOo tbh...

all the people ticking OEM are licensed for it, right?

remember, you CANNOT transfer OEM-licensed microsoft software from one motherboard to another - if you have done, then tick the 'pirate' box.

I've got a couple of OEM XP licences, and I don't have an office suite
I only do serious work that would require an office suite at work, and if I ever did need one, I'm lucky enough to qualify for Educational Staff discounts on quite a few MS/Adobe/[insert random name here] applications..

why not? OEM software is sold for system-builders to build PCs, then sell, with the software pre-installed. It's not sold to be equivalent to a discounted copy of the full retail package. If you want the features of the full box (less restrictive license, phone support) then it costs more - MS are within their rights to license their software how they like.

Not accorsing to EU case law, they aren't
Microsoft took a company to court for exactily that and lost. (They were "transferring OEM licences form dead machines to live ones)
Remember people, JUST BECAUSE IT SAYS SO IN THE CONTRACT DOES NOT MAKE IT LAW!
EDIT: Just to add case law is as good as any other law. Should anyone attempt to prosecute/sue you for using OEM licenses on machines you didn't get that license with, you simply quote this case and if it isn't dropped it will be in court, unless they can distinguish* your case from that one.

*distinguish - it is the legal word for saying that case doesn't apply because circumstances are different e.g. if a judgement on a criminal case seems to support you, but you are using this to try to get off a speeding ticket, the prosecution will try to distinguish the cases.

    I work for a uni.

We've got a MS site license which entitles us to upgrade to whatever OS we want, and install Office for free on our Home PCs, as long as we occasionally use it for work related purposes.

Reminds me of the old software license where it said you accepeted their licensing if you opened the packet, looked at the packet, sniffed the packet, or walked within 20ft of the packet. If I remember correctly that was chucked out under EU law.
