good gaming mouse for a new gamer ?

this might be in the wrong section if so please move it but i thought gaming section would have the main users im looking to ask

so many gaming mice to choose from but not sure which i like the looks of some of the razer ones like the lachesis orochi an imperator ... just cos of there very high specs, i doubt i will be able to utilise them to their full potential especially the very high resolutions

id like a few programmable buttons and dpi switch (prefer just 2 settings) high and low for general movement then one for snipping anymore would get me confused

im going to get into fps , and i loved borderlands on the 360 so i daresay i will love it more on the pc using a mouse

games like that and some mmorpg games

there is always the 12 quid gigabyte mouse from play that was in the bargain section a few people liked that , but i dont mind paying a little extra if it gets me a better experience and better driver suite

I'll vouch for the mx518. Mines is still going and adequate for my needs.

I love my Microsoft Habu, all the creature comforts of a MS mouse, and all the witchcraft from Razer.

Mines is a 5 button mouse. You need to install Setpoint to be able to assign other functions to the buttons.

I leave it at default for Windows.

It has 2 dpi buttons, one in front and one at the back of the mousewheel. So people find this a problem, but I like it this way, so I know I'm turning it up and down.

I mostly game at 1600dpi for fps, and 400dpi for windows and rts or similar.

Two thumb buttons. I usually assign these ingame to reload and melee/drop gun. In windows they act as back and forward buttons for folders and IE/firefox.

Oh and another button that is for switching apps, but I hardly touch it.

yeh the habu looks good for the money ,

i liked the look of the other MS mouse that had the back an forward buttons vertically instead of the usual layout that looked like a good idea , although how often do u hit back by accident when your trying to hit forward button ...?

    Mx528 / G5 / Mx510

Apparently you can get mx518's that goto 1800dpi. But that might be a typo or a lie.

By default it's set to 3 dpi modes, 400/800/1600.
There is no visual indication of switching mode.

Re: good gaming mouse for a new gamer ?

    Remember to look into mousemats/surfaces.

I've found that the feet wear down and go scratchy on the mx518. I tried the the Razer exactmat, but that only partially worked before wearing more. So in the end I settled for a teflon sheet and wrapped it around my mouse area on my desk. As long as I clean it and the mouse, its nice and smooth.

I've never found a perfect mouse for sweat though, G5 feels weird. The mx518 does need a wiping after a long gaming session.

Hope this helps you make an informed choice.

Re: good gaming mouse for a new gamer ?

Depends how you hold the mouse really - claw or palm grip. If you're not used to a gaming mouse I would just get something like the microsoft intellimouse explorer 3 which is a cracking mouse and is actually used by more gamers than any other "gaming mouse" I believe. I'm looking to doing a review of one in the next few weeks hopefully, have already contacted Microsoft to do so.

Track ball, in my left hand, (i am right handed). A trackball never runs of out desk space, and you have your master had to do keyboard work at the same time. I have used a trackball and a joystick at the same time for space sims which is great as you don't need to move your hands from the device.
