My SSD Rocks!

So I've plugged it in after waiting all day - In the end it wasn't even CL who delivered it (LOL?)

Anyhow, TRIM. Is there some way I know its actively running ? Crystal Disk has the TRIM function highlighted but I don't know if that means its active or if it just to let me know its supported.

There was a program you could run, and there was also a command prompt you could run.. But they soon turned out to be useless, with them still returning positive results on drives that don't even support TRIM..

If you're running Windows 7 and your filesystem is formatted with NTFS, then you're running with TRIM.

Nope.

If Crystaldisk has it highlighted, then the drive is reporting to windows it can do TRIM. In addition, at a command prompt:

Command prompt > fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

...tells you if windows has enabled sending the command.

It's all a bit of a muddle - not helped by the fact that some controllers/drivers do not pass the TRIM command on.

Dyou have the exact steps for command prompt as I'm getting to the "fsutil" menu but then when I type in "behavior" its refuses to do anything :S - It just displays the "fsutil" menu again

Note you probably need to launch the prompt as an admin:

- Hit start
- type cmd
- right click on the cmd entry and choose "run as administrator"


(as an aside this machine has a mechanical drive)

And as I said my mechanical drive system also reports zero.

To make it even more abundantly clear - the following must all be true:

1. controller supports the TRIM command (i.e. forwards it to the drive)
2. drive supports TRIM
3. drive reports (via controller) TRIM is available
4. windows has disabledeletenotify set to zero (which only indicates windows is capable of sending the command, NOT that it's actively in use).

1-3 are effectively indicated by crystaldisk's TRIM highlighting - hence it being such a useful tool - MS could of made this a darn sight easier to understand IMHO.

Well it has a point, it's just that people have decided to misinterpret it's function

Well I assume its working as I'm using Win 7, the P55 PCH, X-25V & the Intel SSD toolbox says my drive is optimised - with optimisation including TRIM functionality.

But yeah its confusing - maybe a sticky can be created for getting TRIM to work / checking if its working.

You could always spam the drive with repeated writing of ~ 40GB of data. If it starts slowing down by the second or third write you'll know TRIM isn't working
