Wall E
I saw this film last night. I think it's coming to the UK in a couple of weeks, so you have the hype to look forward to. It's a big film! I really, really enjoyed it. But at the same time I wonder if it's going to annoy a lot of people. Already the web is full of 'WallE is racist against fat people' comments, and it's true. Wall E does take a poke at fat people, the ignorant and people who spend too much time using IT service to avoid real social interaction (erm.... Hi!). There were a few fat people who waddled out part way through, but I think it's a fair social commentary. This film is very damning of American culture, and for me this was a more prevalent message than dancing robots.
Of course, it's all been done before. 'Idiocracy' in particular highlighted the direction in which this culture is heading. The difference is, this is a mainstream kids film, which is likely to be seen by a much wider audience. How much of this audience will be too stupid to realise is another question. Of course, as Europeans, we openly Gawk at the fat people in their electric chairs driving around Walmart. We already think of Americans as fitting with the people in this film. So in that respect, all it does is enhance the stereotype. I look forward to comments in a few weeks. |

Really looking forward to seeing this....going to take the kids, but they're really superfluous since I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Re: Wall E
I saw it on Sunday, I have to say I'm inclined to watch it again, it's that good! I'm so glad that Pixar have at least tried to do something else than make another animal the next funniest thing...Cars wasn't so much a hit, but this definately works. The lack of dialogue, for the most part, serves the animation well to to convey emotion and reaction.
The critism I heard mostly when walking out....including my date....was that nobody really cared much for the "environment" theme...and it never really occured to me before, but the messages in Disney-Pixar movies have never been so overt. And, as mentioned before, it's not just a kids movie and the studios have acknowledged this...but then you ask, whose benefit is it for? The baby whose understanding will be limited to the animated antics, the impressionable youngster, the ignorant adult...all and everyone else? I'm not against the issues and messages that Wall-E convey, and in no way does it detract anything from an excellent film, but I do kinda feel it could've been less political for a universal film - it didn't affect me when I was watching it....in the end, take it out and you don't have much of a plot anyway. I havent come across any fatist issues when discussing the film with anyone....but then again I haven't discussed it with any overweight people, or saw any in the cinema coming to think of it. I can probably see why some people may take offense, but it would be rather case in point... |

Re: Wall E
Saw it last night - very good. I'm not sure any moral about the environment will really be picked up by the majority of the audience (ie kids) and no doubt fat kids at school will be bullied more. However from an animation pov it's amazingly well done, and well humoured throughout.

Re: Wall E
Saw Wall-e on Saturday. Loved it! It's shot into my Top 10 best films ever and not many films do that! I never gave the environment/ fatist (FFS - fatist?) issues a second thought I have to say apart from thinking yep, that's right. It's a great film, well put together with a proper story and plotline. I'm raving about it at work today!

Re: Wall E
I don't know about other pixar films, but it's better than Hancock or Wanted. Hancock has a great first half, then get's pretty bad. Wanted is just poor.

Re: Wall E
I remember watching trailers for Wall-E quite a while back and thinking it looks like a good film.
I'll probably take my brother to see it (he's finished school for summer, so it should keep him occupied for a while!). |

Re: Wall E
Did anyone else go and watch it without kids? Just wondering as I mentioned I'd seen it at work today & round a family dinner, and most poked fun at the point that I had no kids or teenagers dragging along with me! Surely I'm allowed to watch these kind of films without child supervision?

Re: Wall E
Well...
I went to the pictures last night with the missus and her son to see this and thought it was absolutely cracking. It kept all the kids attention span throughout the film which is no easy feat, and some of the parts had all the adults laughing and the kids wondering what was son funny. In fact, that's probably the quietest I've heard a cinema full of kids since the release of finding nemo. Would I see it again on DVD etc ? Yeap - I would, it's worth the time ![]() |
