    Problems with the hard drive

I have suddenly experienced a problem with one of my hard drives

A program froze and I tried to stop it with Task Manager then that froze as well. I tried to shut down the system but it froze and I had to reboot it. When it displayed the drives one said it had an error. Other than that the pc seems to work fine except that it had forgotton passwords and other settings.

CFan anyone advise what the problem is likely to be is it that one of the hard disks has failed. Is there a way to check?

The two hard disks are set up in a Raid Mirror configuration.

The details of the system are as follows

Re: Problems with the hard drive

    Hi

If you get a crash or lockup and the system reboots it may need to repair the Raid this is sometimes a fail safe and the integrity of the Raid is simply checked, as you have a mirror the system will boot even if one drive fails altogether

Please check the Event Logs in Administrative Tools as these may give you an idea as to what software may have caused the crash etc

    Regards

    Ben

Not sure what this means but maybe you do. I presume this was me rebooting the system without letting it shut down.

If I need to repair/check the raid how do I do this?

    Thanks for your help

Re: Problems with the hard drive

    Hi Robin

The Raid will repair itself in windows, if the Raid is degraded or not working it will show at startup

Make sure as you are using Windows 7 that the Power Saving Features are disabled as detailed in this thread

    http://forums.hexus.net/scan-3xs-sys...ocked-pcs.html

Its possible that the system has tried hibernating while accessing the drive maybe the Raid was rebuilding at the time

You can also install the Intel Matrix Storage software off the motherboard CD this will give you more info on the Raid and the state of it

    Regards

    Ben

Re: Problems with the hard drive

    Ben

Sorry for not replying to you sooner.

The Raid does describe itself as degraded at startup but still bootable.

One of the drives says its ok and the other says it has an error.

If the raid is degraded how should I resolve that?

    Thanks in anticipation

    Robin

    Ben

I can't see the software you mean on the motherboard CD

It is the DVD that came with the Rampage II Extreme?

There is nothing on there with that name

Re: Problems with the hard drive

    Ben

There's sems to be a program called Intel Matrix Storage Program I think that shows during boot.

This gives the option to enter the Configuration Utility

Is this what you are refering too?

    Thanks for your help

What Operating System do you have?

What version is it (Pro, Home, etc)

    is it 32bit or 64bit?

Right click on "my computer" and select "Properties" to find out. Post back here and I'll follow the page to get the right link for you and post it here.

What is confusing me is that this program seems to be already installed. I am not sure why I need to install it again. Does the program enable me to repair the Raid

    Thanks

    Yes.

Run the program, it should show you the disks in the array. click on the disk showing as degraded and, on the left side of the screen (beside status), set it to normal.

Re: Problems with the hard drive

Does this run before windows starts or is it a program I install and run from within windows

I am assuming the one I downloaded is not the one that is showing on start up and offering to allow me to enter the configuration utility?
