    Cool HEXUS.beans - World Exclusive – AMD Dual-Core desktop processor details revealed

    Posted by PD on the front page:

    the power of X...

    It's no big secret that AMD is scheduled to launch its dual-core Server and professional workstation Opteron processors later in the year.

    However details of what's set to be let loose to hunt down Intel's recently announced Pentium Extreme Edition 840 has, up till now, been well hidden...

    HEXUS can exclusively reveal that this is to be named the AMD Athlon 64 X2

    It will be available at least in the following models:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+

    Our source in Greenbriar also confirms that AMD currently has no plans to introduce 'FX' variants of its dual-core desktop processors.

    The flagship AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ will have both its cores operating at 2.4GHz, the same frequency as the AMD Athlon 64 4000+, and we'll be surprised if this doesn't rape the already impressive Pentium Extreme Edition 840 we reviewed here.

    Xtra stuff later...

    in the meantime be sure and add your thoughts on this breaking news
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    cool.. however i would be instersted to see their realworld perofmance.. am i right in thinking atht these will run on conventional socket 939boards with only a bios update..
    AMD3000+ ATIX800XL + GBNF44x mobo.. all at stock because they're good enough atm + CA A1 amp-->Mission 73S Loigtech MX1000 + 1GB ram + 1/3 TB HD array
    Wintendo XP + Linux (when it works) .. just incase you were wondering

    That's the current understanding, that only a bios update will be needed for most boards. Of course there's no garuntee that ALL 939 boards will work, but a majority of them should if properly based on or simply imroved from the original reference design to go with the chipset on it. And I can see that both CPU's will keep the current trend in real world performance of encoding/decoding mostly being Intel dominated and games belonging to AMD still. Even with Intel's upcoming push to game developers towards making use of dual cores, AMD stands to benifit much more then Intel will. Dual 3.2Ghz P4 cores are no match for dual 2.4Ghz K8 cores, core for core in games. That doesn't look likely to change IMHO...

    Nice

    I cannot wait to play with these when they are released.

    All we need now is programmers to take advantage of "dual cores" and we'll be sorted

    Ditto that me want! Will be interesting to see how it compares to my Opti 150.

    Most likely the 4800+ version cannot beat your 150 in Single-threaded app but multithread will be much faster than your 150.

    I'm more interested in Dual Opteron 265 though. Hopefully they'll be not much more expensive than Old 24x/25x series.

    same here! Its way past upgrade time for me... The only problem I have with these dual cores is that software must be designed to work with them if there to take advantage of the dual cores....

    4 Instances of Folding (For Dual Opteron DC) not enough?

    EDIT: Odd, where is my very first post related to this topic?
    EDIT2: Found in my history
    The performance will be like 5% higher than two Opteron 244,246 and 248 (1.8, 2.0, 2.2Ghz)
    I assume they have 1M cache so based on 512K cache extra = 0.2Ghz rule.
    (Based on A64 vs Opteron and Opteron SC vs Opteron DC tests)

    I dare say 4800+ will have a price tag of £500~650 or it will undercut Dual Opteron line.
    £400~500 for 4600+ and £220~330 for 4400+ (All calculated based on Dual Opteron price)
    EDIT: Those price I estimated is ex.vat

    Yay for dual core...so seriously guys...for an unlimited budgest gaming system, number crunching just no holds bar performance, is a dual opteron better? Or would you think a dual FX would be better? Frankly I dont understand the basic difference between an FX and an Opteron...anyone care to elaborate please?
