fatal1ty fp-in9 sli hard drive issue HELP!!!!!

hey this is for abit sean or gilgamesh mainly although all input welcome

right had my fp-in9 for a few weeks now and got 2 wd caviar 16ogb sata 150 on raid

have been getting a couple of bad sectors on one drive for about a year that all the usual programs cant fix

anyway got system running small overclock 2.6ghz and having a small problem when i start it up she posts ok and goes to windows xp loading screen and this is were my problem starts i get a strange rythmic noise coming from one of the hard drives

(RYTHMIC NOISE IS CONSTANT EVEN WHEN PC WORKS FINE JUST NOT AS LOUD)

really hard to explain the noise but is every 5-10 secs a sort of quiet boing

and it will stay on the xp loading screen for an age then i have to cut power and restart usually it will go straight into windows next time round


also have had a few issues of gaming and the hard drive appears to come to a complete stop during load etc and pc grinds to a halt and have to restart


drives are about 3 years old

what i need to know is this an issue that you have seen with this board or is one of my drives failing

Sounds like a failed drive to me. Rhythmic noises from the disk in question simultaneous to slowdowns/freezes are a sure sign of that (in my experience, at least...)

It would be a failing drive i'm afraid. The sound you describe is typical of a head-head driver failure.

Yup MOST certainly a hdd failure m8 NOT doubt about that, you can check up on the state of your drives by downloading the diagnostic tool from the WD website.

The fact that you have got th em in raid (even more so if they are in raid 0) puts strain on the drives. If one of them has bad sectors, then raiding them up ofcourse will puta massive strain on them, and ofcourse this will show up more because of the bad sectors.

the stars are the numerous expletives i am now shouting at my pc

i figured it was the drive but was hoping it was a problem with the board as it has had so many of them

anyone got any ideas on how long before the drive fails completely as i am working alot right up til end of june gotta get job finished or poop and fan scenario as i dont wanna pay saturday delivery on some new drives
and have to check to make sure the walls t my flat are still there everyday so getting a neighbour to sign for it is out fo the question

also used the wd diagnostic tool and it says everything is ok except for once when it tested and the drive died so it said nothing cos i had to restart

ALSO FINALLY realised what the sound is similar to

closest to someone giving a record player a little nudge and the needle skipping only it is a lot fainter if this means anything to anyone

Familiar sound... it's a "tzwizzdtt" or "dzzitt" kind'of... that's the head bouncing on the platter while moving back and forth trying to read data from the same spot, only misses the exact point and tries again and again..
I'd make an image of that array right away if i were u, and i would run spinrite on the defective drive (in free dos) to see if i could do anything with it other than nailing it on my crap tech art wall..

RAID0 puts a heavy strain even on HEALTHYdrives, but an broken one it would even more so. If i were you break the array, reinstall the O/S that drive might last a little longer then, giving you time to replace it. Remember the less strain on that drive the better!

cheers mate backup my important data once a month these days so very little risk of losing anything important (used to use NORTON MULTIVIRUS so lost a lot of info before)


as i use raid 0 normally would you say its worth the extra £10 on each drive to buy a couple of WD raid editions as they are supposed to be able to with stand the rigours of raid better

raptors not an option price too high and i have way too much data been thinking about extending out my current array of 2x 160gb anyway so probably go with a couple of 250gb ones
