Overclocked IP35 on air - max temps?

My IP35 got delivered on Saturday and I've had fun playing with it so far
Q6600 (B3) + 2 sticks 1Gb Corsair 6400C4D + cheap 650w PSU that appears to be doing damn well so far!

Got stable @ 3.2Ghz with the following settings:

    356 x 9 with memory at 1:1 and manual settings of 4,4,4,12
    All CPU features disabled
    CPU upped to 1.3275v
    DDR2 / VTT / ICH / MCH I left standard @ 2.1v / 1.2v / 1.5v / 1.25v

Temps using Everest with all CPU's flat out (using Everest's stability test function) ar approx 65-68°

I tried to run at 3.4Ghz with the above settings and although it posted and loaded Vista, it wasn't stable enough to run the stability test for more than a minute or so.

The question is, is approaching 70° pretty much it and I shouldn't really try any harder without getting any more cooling in (currently running an Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro 7) or is it ok to run these quad core's hotter than that?

    Thoughts anyone?

Re: Overclocked IP35 on air - max temps?

I'd say pretty much it in terms of temps. The AC 7 Pro is good for low to medium OC's but I dont think it copes too well with Quad OC.

I have a Tuniq 120 and had it on 3.2Ghz temps on Idle were 38 to 40 44 to 48 on Orthos stable 6 hrs..
We have also had some hot weather and temps will climb accordingly.

With a more decent cooler you will get your temps down, depending on your case air flow and a dozen other influences.

BTW I did exactly the same as yourself, not touched the voltages just went with the 1:1 divider.

I have the ip35 pro version. i have managed to get 498fsb by lowering hte multiplier to x8. I have posted my settings in my review. Mind you I am cooling the cpu only via water. However it should give you a guide.

70c is a bit much for even a quadcore

Re: Overclocked IP35 on air - max temps?

I must admit, I'm tempted to try again at 8x rather than 9x to see if I can get it stable but with less voltage (and hence less temperature!)

At the moment though - it appears stable(ish) at my current settings. 4 copies of Prime95 are not 100% stable to be honest as 1 copy will usually bomb out after a while but for normal gaming use I'm guessing that it will be fine. If not, I can back off a bit and go a little bit slower

Unless I start looking at water cooling everything I guess ... now that would be an interesting project that would scare me silly

    you know something

to get massive overclocks like on my system, i ONLY have the cpu water cooled
this board runs COOL so only normal air cooling is need onthis board.

I was under the impression that my cpu let me down of getting 500fsb on a quadcore

    but remember this

    1.6 VOLTS @498FSB on a q6600 = 309 WATTS, total output overclockedfor my system=617 watts
and since i only have 620watts corsair hx620 psu ): even on water getting over 460fsbx8 is doing REALLY well. These quadcores are a right pain to overclock to a decent fsb

Re: Overclocked IP35 on air - max temps?

    Well, even though I don't have an IP35 (FP-IN9 SLI) I have an E4300 o/c 3GHz.
This has a whooping great Tuniq 120 Tower, like DratUK.
Orthos stress tested and the temp reading using RightMark CPU Clock Utility was between 48 and 50 degrees.
Idle is around 29 to 30.
