    IX38 QuadGT & DDR2-533

Slight problem with my new build.

I forgot that my existing RAM is actually rated at 533MHz despite being able to run happily at 800MHz without upping the voltage or changing the timings.

When starting my new build (IX38 QuadGT) I get the C1 error - is it the RAM speed rating that is the problem? Is there anyway around this (other than buying new RAM!!!)

    Thanks

think you may have the same issue as me there bud - ie no support for that RAM on the chipset (although it should clock 667 memory at 533 speeds, should you want to)... BUFF will know, he's got almost scary abit knowledge

sad geek that I am ...
    X38 chipset specs
    section 10.2.2 DDR2 667 & DDR2 800 support - no mention of 533.

Pretty sure that it will be the same as on P35 i.e. as Tumble outlined.

    & welcome to Hexus btw

What CPU are you running Typhoon, and have you tried the usual trick of starting the system with a single DIMM, to see if you can get to the POST screen (and BIOS setup utility)?

The IX38 QuadGT has memory bus multipliers all the way down to 1:1, so theoretically, provided the board picks the correct multiplier, you should be able to get to at least a POST screen with a 266MHz FSB (or slower) CPU and your existing RAM, even though it isn't officially supported.

Mind you, given how cheap good DDR2 is at the moment, it isn't worth spending a lot of time trying to make this work. You've bought a high performance motherboard - and you're going to seriously hobble it with that DDR2-533, even if you can get it to work.

    I have to agree there.
A flagship motherboard with almost bottom spec RAM is a little wasteful.

Even if cash isnt flowing to great atm, 2x1gb of PC6400 can still be had for under £30

    Re: IX38 QuadGT & DDR2-533

    Thanks for the replies.

I have tried all the usual tricks - one stick, then the other, different slots, clear CMOS, leaving the battery out overnight etc. - nothing gets me far enough to get into the BIOS. It looks like the 533 just isn't going to work.

The real reason I am using it is because I forgot about its official rating - I was running it at 800 in my old machine for over a year and never thought about it until the new mobo wouldn't post.

Picked up 2Gb of Corsair XMS2 PC2-6400 for £20 last night on Ebay - that should do for now?
