    speedstep feature

    Hi all,

I've been an AMD man untill now, and I've got my first intel pc.

My old 64 3000 had a driver which controlled the voltage applied to the chip dependant on load.
As I understand it these intel puppies have speed step which does the same thing.

On the amd rig, minimal power management has to set in power settings. Do you have to do the same for intels?

    Cheers

my Q6600 done it from day 1, just had to enable EIST in the BIOS.
1.6GHZ and 1.125v at idle 2.4GHz and 1.25v at load.

    Ok cool, thanks.
I get similar readings (less MHZ, but more volts for lower useage)
Is it snowing up there in Carlisle?

    Cheers

    no problem pal.
you should get less volts aswell.. 'cause it's the volts that create the heat mainly.

it's not, been on and off all day though..
is it properly snowing down in London?

    Re: speedstep feature

    Hey, I'm an educated man!
    Snowing now, but not laying.

I find the feature quite aggressive
For example while spyware scanning last night, cpu usage was about 25%, but my volts were going to the vcore max of 1.25v.
On my old AMD system, a 25% cpu usage would not result in full volts to the cpu.

I was just wondering if any of the power schemes in XP would make a difference.
I'll have a look on the web.

    Cheers

    Re: speedstep feature

    From Intel:
"Finally Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology must be turned on in the OS. Currently, for Windows* XP SP2 operating systems Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology by default is off. To turn it on do the following:
Under Control Panel – open Power Options
Under the Power Schemes pull down menu
To turn Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology ON select, “Minimal Power Management,” power scheme.
To turn Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology OFF select, “Always On,” power scheme."
