The website lists Q9550 however that is at bios 13, there is a v14 now. Think you can get a Q9650 in there? In other words, do you need Abit's blessing everytime there is a new CPU under the same family?

depends - if it's just a corespeed variant of an existing CPU then usually you are OK albeit the BIOS won't have the microcode to identify it but if there is a process change, change in architecture etc. then often you need a new BIOS for it to run.
