    IX38 Q9550 Virtualization Technology Setting

    Hi All,

I am running an Abit IX38 board with a Q9550 E0 processor. I want to run Win7 64 but cannot without the Virtualization Technology setting on, but I don't have it in my bios. I am using bios 14 B2. It is not under the CPU feature.

All I have is the following:

    Thermal Control
    Limit CPUID MaxVal
    C1E Function
    Execute Disable Bit.

I don't have the last two:

    Virtualization Technology
    EIST Function

Anybody Got any ideas how to get those?

    Thanks in advance!!

Re: IX38 Q9550 Virtualization Technology Setting

I saw this thread before, but didnt want to post because I'm only guessing... but...

Surely there wont be a bios option for this sort of setting. Just as there isnt for MMX and all the other instruction settings. The processor either has it or not.

Besides, why can you only install W7 with 'virtualisation on'? Running ok on my IX38 and E5200. Virtualisation would be fairly useful for old games that dont like 64 bit I guess. But its not a big deal for me.

Are you running Windows 7 x64 though?

As for old games, they dont run using virtualisation, they run using WOW64, unless theyre very old and DOS or 16bit in which case they dont run at all.

Intel VT is only needed for using things like Virtual PC or VMWare and providing acceleration and direct CPU support for the VM.

    Yes.

What I ment by old games, was thats the only reason I have to want to run virtualisation on Windows 7 - Ie, run its XP emulation mode. As it stands I have to dual boot.

I'm running an IX48 GT3 with BIOS 11 and with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 and the manual on page 2-12 CPU Feature lists Virtualization Technology and EIST Function but neither is shown in the actual BIOS.

Don't know if it's really a BIOS issue or a cpu issue; but I thought I'd add my voice as the setup instructions for Win7 says to enable VT if you want to install Win7 using the Microsoft VirtualPC and XP Mode.

What games though? XP Mode doesnt do Direct3D, and old DOS games work fine in DOSbox.

As for old DirectX games, Ive run some pretty old ones on Vista x64, and theyve been fine.

As for the original poster, if you currently have an OS on the machine in question, try running this
    http://www.grc.com/securable.htm
It will tell you if your CPU supports virtualization, ie it is currently enabled.

Gutted. One less reason to upgrade the cpu sooner

Aye, its just Virtual PC with a preinstalled, configured and licenced copy of XP SP3.

Suffers from most of the same problems as VMWare and Virtual Box, a lack of Direct3D and accellerated DirectX in general.

What games are you trying or hoping to play?

You dont know, until you go back to them, but so far its:

The Thief series (apparently possible to get running on Vista 64, but the hex hacks required didnt work the first time I tried, so I gave up).
    Deus Ex games. As above.
Never Winter Night 2. Again, its apparently possible to hand edit a few files (and a dll) to get it to work, but...

This is after < a month running W7. So I'm expecting to need to keep an XP machine handy for many years to come unfortunately.

True, I tried to install NOLF for a laugh, but its got a sucky 16bit installer, so wont work at all.

However, I had a good play on the original Deus Ex, worked fine apart from a slightly crackly audio sometimes.

Some seem to work, others dont, and not even for all Vista x64 users it seems.
