Question abit KN8 -- Maximum RAM

Hi guys, a big hello to everyone!

I was hoping someone might be able to clear up a question a friend of mine has. He purchased an ABIT KN8 motherboard, which on the website lists the maximum RAM capacity as 8GB RAM, however the manual inexplicably (but clearly) states that the board supports a maximum of 4GB of RAM. Which is it?

Hi Sean, thanks for the quick response.

It seems I have been lead astray though. I just realized that the limit of the RAM, at least with socket 939, is not so much by the board as by the processor. So while the KN8 will, in theory, accept 8GB of RAM, the processor wouldn't be able to deal with 8GB of RAM. It would seem then that my options are to replace it with either AM2 or dual-Opteron 248 Sledgehammer and accompanying socket 940/AM2. Sigh, yet another rebuild.

I gotta start reading these things more carefully -- unless someone wants to correct me... please?

The maximum that Windows 32-bit OS can handle is 4Gb, therefore there would be no benefit to 8GB unless you are using Windows 64 (or another 64-bit OS).

Anyway, I wasn't aware the 2Gb DIMMs of DDR 1 RAM was on the market anyhow.

Going to AM2 will mean using DDR2 spec RAM.

I put 4gb in an AN8Ultra and WinXp only picks up 2.75Gb, if you want the OS to see all 4gb u have to go *nix or WinXP x64Bit..

Its not as simple as just the OS - there is a hardware issue at play too. Check out your other thread; ive posted some links in there which explain it

Hi (-_-), why would you even consider using 8GB of RAM? As long as I know, 4GB is definitely more than enough for any applications.
