no os load AB9 quad gt :(

anyone else had trouble loading os on this mobo?

e4300, nec labelflash dvdrw, 2 gig vs ddr2-667, zalman 600w psu, xfx 8800gtx

all bios settings at default, get to loading the "setup is checking your computer" from the xp boot disc but no blue install screen , then reboots

had a similar issue loading an os from a Shuttle CD40 dvdrw, is this likely to be same issue ?

dont they require a basic os 1st ?, I am not getting the xp disc to register my hardware atm

I have the bios enabled for the jmicron and the dvd drive is detected at boot, when I select boot from cd/dvd I get the problem stated above

p.s. should the +5v led on mobo be lit red or green ?

Sorry I miss read the post. Can the motherboard boot from any device?

The +5v led should be on.

it boots from cdrom but does not complete the hardware detection phase, I have tried 2 different sata hd's and both are recognised in bios, but neither has an OS at this time.

I was asking what colour should the LED be, red or green ?, it is currently red, but there are other status lights on board that are green, I was merely wondering if due to it being red, is it pointing the finger at something which may be causing my issues.

the manual does not detail the colour of the led's

p.s. I have tried the controllers both as IDE and AHCI and it makes no difference [i.e. it detects satas as SCSI 0 & 1, but doesn't get me any further]

edit, nevermind the answers appear to be on the usa forums, will print out and look at em when I get home, my initial hunch of a "picky" IDE interface would seem accurate

Have spent a fair bit of time working through the options on this board over the weekend Stephen, it is a bit picky but eminently doable. It is made much easier however by the beta BIOS of which much has been discussed over on Abit USA.

If you do not need to set up a RAID array on the Intel ICH8R controller, the best BIOS is the Beta 2 currently available on the Abit USA beta BIOS page.

If however, you do need to use the Intel RAID controller while connecting parallel ATA devices on the JMicron controller, you need the beta 6 BIOS mentioned here.

The 5vSB LED is red, the "Power On" LED is green.

Others' experience apparently varies but I've been able to get XP installed fine with the JMicron controller set to IDE. In this scenario it is not necessary to load drivers for this controller via the F6 prompt.

However, in order to get Ultra DMA transfers going on the optical devices, the JMicron drivers must be loaded once you've got the OS running. It is not, IME, also necessary to set the controller to "RAID" mode however, which is what others have reported. Indeed doing this on my system disabled UDMA on the optical drives!

thanks for taking the time to post your findings, I've managed to borrow a USB cdrom, so I will take the easy route this evening unless you think it will be a wasted venture

    Depends what you mean!

The 1.0 BIOS that the boards are shipped with apparently have a problem booting from USB drives, so you may well still run into problems trying to load the OS via this method - unless you first flash one of the beta BIOSes, the earliest of which apparently fixed this issue.

As mentioned above, you shouldn't have any issues installing Windows from a regular parallel ATA controller hanging off the JMicron port. It's probably going to be better to stick with that than complicate matters too much with external drives.

we have lift off , what a palaver, my Shuttle SD37P2 was a doddle setting up compared to this, anyways using beta 2 via a USB floppy, installed os sucessfully

already knew my e4300 would do 400fsb, and the Quad GT does it with less volts and runs cooler as you would expect

    thanks for the redirection

p.s. need to work out how to slow down the cpu fan now, I'm sure its enabled in uGuru bios

Sorted! As far as the CPU fan is concerned, I've found it a little finicky over which fans it'll throttle and which it won't. The OE Intel fans will throttle, but the Zalman and CoolerMaster 4 wire fans I've tried run at full whack no matter what the fanEQ settings are. Not sure whether this is a board issue or a fan issue.

It also goes without saying that there's no control for three wire fans on the CPU header. The only way to go with these is to use one of the Aux headers and slave the throttling on whichever channel you use to the CPU temp.
