    Upgrading G3 B&W Graphics Card

    Hi,

I have a G3 Blue/White and its running with a 16mb ATi card, I have a GeForce 4 MX PCI Card from a PC sitting doing nothing at the moment, is it ok to stick the GeForce in the mac in place of the ATi card?

    Any replies appreciated, thanks

i'm not sure that it would work.

i remember you had to flash the bios of the voodoo 5 mac pci version in order to get it to work in a PC - so perhaps it's the same with the geforce - you may need a mac bios to get it to work...

nVidias in Macs aren't nearly as well supported, and nVidia flashing hasn't really worked well...certainly not for Old World macs, but you may get away with it if you tinker in your open firmware. I believe you have to enter a line on every boot up, from what I read. Have a look on Google, or try www.xlr8yourmac.com 's forums...there are other forums out there too!

I did have success with a Radeon 7000 a while ago in my PM9500, then sold it, and newer cards don't work (rom chip sizes....price goes from £35 to £100 ). Radeon 7000 is about as good as you're gonna get, I think...although there is talk of a R9000??
    Well Hello!

    Thanks for the replies,

I'm not too bothered about upgrading, its more just because I could what with that card doing nothing at the moment.

I've already got 512mb RAM and an 80Gb hard drive in the box, it runs fine with OS X so i'm happy.

I'll take a look at those forums, might be able to do something with it.
