I have just orderd a 12" Powerbook - they do not charge VAT but instead you have a customs duty charge which increases with the price

so technically it could work out around the same:]
I think you'd make about £50 over the apple site so it might be worth it
I find customs charges very strange, once I ordered some dvds from america, which came to me as one boxed item, then 3 months later I received a bill for the dvds from customs requesting a third of the price. ;\
usually customs charge the post office, so they must receive the money from you in order to release the item ordered
Depends on who shipps it. I have imported replica weapons from Hong Kong alot (fun fun fun ) and the charges normally work about 18% in total (It's normally VAT + £4/15 handling charge depending on the courier).
UPS will demand money on the door
EMS will demand money on the door
Parcel Force will demand money on the door (and or damage your item)
FedEx will bill you at a later date (there will be a invoice on the item itself)
Customs charge the courier service, not you, which is why they like the money back sharpish.
Post Office won't do anything as they don't do large packages, they pass them on to Parcel Force.
Items marked as "Gift" and under £35 do not get charged, items over that price are hit and miss.

The bill I received months later was from parcel force, but it was photocopies of the actual bills? Very strange.
