    Windows and Mac Networking

    Hello all,

I have been trying to network my brand new 12" Powerbook with my Pc. The operating systems are OSX2.7 and windows xp pro. It is important i can share files tonight! I have been through several tutorials but none seem to work.

    1. I disable my Pc's firewall and enable filesharing under the name Mshome
    2. I enable Windows and Personnal file sharing on my powerbook
    3. I change my windows account to exactly the same username and password (David Lindsay ********)
    4. I connect the correct ethernet cable between the computers
    5. I check my network in both computers - nothing apart from their own files!

What am I doing wrong? Thankyou very much for the help, David Lindsay

p.s could airport extreme be messing around with my ethernet connection? but i turn that off and still nothing. Also when i restart my powerbook with airport extreme enable and warning appears on windows xp pro saying that a computer with the same name has connected, but i still find nothing, and the LAN sign doesn't have a cross through it. And thoughts?

Can anyone help me with the networking?

you can try disabling the airport, might help.

you access the windows server through some kind of "connect to server" option in the finder, i can't remember really as it was on a housemate's laptop before i decided pcs were superior

    Have you tried any troubleshooting?
Like seeing if you can ping your pc from your mac, and vice-versa?
Have you tried setting the IPs manually?

Are they named differently? The computers that is, if they both have the same name it wont like it.

Specify their IP addresses (unless you have them connected through a router or something that gives them IP addresses).

Then from the PC try and ping the Macs IP address.

If you get a reply then they're networked and its just a matter of software settings to get the rest working

Firstly, I would call them different things; rename the powerbook in the Networking pane of systems prefs. Turn on windows file sharing as before. Turn on file shareing on the PC as well.
Connect the two together, and then from the Go menu in the finder, click "Connect to server" (apple+k) This should bring up a list of connected networked computers. In theory you should be able to double click on the PC,enter sername and password, and have the shared folder mount on the desktop. Then you can drag and drop files across.

To ping on a PC you can go to the command prompt and type ping IPaddress, where IPaddress is the IP address of the machine you want to ping.
On the Mac, launch Terminal and do the same.

You can set the IP manually on the Mac through 'Network' in System Preferences, and in Windows through Properties of the network connection.
