The Mac mini starts at £499 (or £469.20 with an education discount). Even after upgrading mine with 4GB RAM (from Crucial) and a 500GB HDD it was still a lot less than £1,000. I think most people would be quite happy with the performance of the Mac mini (not to mention the size and quietness too), although I do agree it would be nicer if they were a bit cheaper.

Yeah... wow. would I have bought my Mac a long time ago if it wasn't for the price lol.
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.
I have never bought a new one, though even second hand they hold value very well.
Only things I have bought from apple new are the latest version of OSX, and my iPod (4G 20g)
