Mac and RAM

I am hoping someone can help.

I have been looking on the crucial website at mac pro ram compatibility and the ram for a mac is:
Part Number: CT579442

Module Size: 2GB kit (1GBx2)
Package: Apple 240-pin FBDIMM
Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300
Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 72 •

Now looking on the same site at my asus board is this

Part Number: CT2KIT12864AA667

Module Size: 2GB kit (1GBx2)
Package: 240-pin DIMM
Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300
Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 •

The difference being one is buffered one isnt and that one is FBdimm the other is just Dimm.

My question is, would the unbuffered one work on a mac?

the price difference is about £70 for a 2gb kit.

If you have a mac pro that uses FB-Dimms then simply put, you can't use the other set of ram you mentioned, it has to be the FB-Dimms, and you must buy them in matched pairs.

The chips are different depending on which mac pro you have though - from the sounds of it you have the same as me (2nd generation late 2008 intel mac pro) so definitely need FB-Dimms. I would personally look at buying from ebay though or OCW (http://www.macsales.com/) - even with potential import tax they are both usually cheaper than Crucial, who are traditionally expensive for FB-Dimms.

I dont actually have one yet but i am looking at buying one. I ideally would like one that could replace my PC completely, to do this it would need to be able to play games on bootcamp.

Looking at second hnd ones and for about 800 you canget a decent imac but some only have 2 gig ram which i just dont think is enough.

My MBP takes the same 204pin 1333MHz DDR3 RAM as other laptops, and I think the iMac takes the same RAM aswell. I just bought normal Corsair stuff.
