Yes, try corsair or crucial based stuff.

works very well :)
ian
ps. if you find some ram cheap just put it in google and see if anyone else with that ram has tried it in a macbook ;)
Just got this

Using a lovely 20" Core Duo iMac with (shortly) a couple gigs of RAM. :)
macbook g4,
256mb ram
no idea about anything else...
RAM? Yes. Anything else? Virtually impossible. Apple Macintosh laptops are among the worst for user repairs/upgrades.Quote:
So can you upgrade mac notebooks relatively easily then?
we have an original mac mini at work:

On the current MacBook the memory and HDD are trivial upgrades. The Pro is a bit of a night mare for everything except ram.
Ive upgraded the RAM and harddrive in my macbook.
100Gb Sata for £35 not too bad :)

Just need to upgrade my Quicksilver now...
@lost eden that looks a fair bit whiter than mine :) I need to take mine to the apple shop to get it fixed this summer :)
Doesn't seem like I've nearly had it a year :o
Ian
PS. what antiquated windows version are you using? :P
Heh, I haven't had mine a month now & the wrist-rests are already a delicate shade of yellow & it's already in for repairs!Quote:

That be good ol' win2kprosp4, the only version of Windows I am prepared to use. I just can't stand XP or Vista, & reserve 98se for really old hardware (like my 233MHz lappy, which actually ran surprisingly well!).Quote:

Recently I got a mbp as well, 2.33 - pretty decent :)
The mbp has one of the better laptop keyboards if you ask me.
I love mine.
Hate the macbook one tho.
Gordy - have you tried the C2D MBP? Just wondered if you had some insight into the performance differences. I see the Core Duo MBP's on Apple refurb site for £900 at moment. May consider one instead of a MacBook to replace my iBook.
I went with the Daddy of Mac's and picked up a Macpro in Oct 2006! It's a brilliant machine and does everything i could wish for! I've recently got into editing movies so i'm going to upgrade to 4gb ram and i've just added a 3rd hard drive (320gb)
I've also got a Powerbook G4 17", that'll need upgrading at some point soon but for now it does the job.
Can't wait until 10.5 and iLife comes out! I always thought it was sad "Mac People" trying to tell me how bad Windows was, but now i can fully understand where they were coming from. OSX is just brilliant!

Hi just a quick question for the mac users
If two systems have identical specs, one using windows (let's say xp for this one) and osx
will an application such as photoshop run differently?
because I know before Macs were reknowned for being much more stable than windows therefore the favoured platform for ps when you need to open loads of images, but recently someone said its identical now..
thanks
OS x is said to be more stable that windows, but in reality they aren't too different. I use photoshop on mac and pc and as long as the mac one is running cs3 it will run at almost identical speeds in both operating systems.
thanks for answering
i was wondering about this as I hope to go into graphic design and if i needed a mac for best productivity...
The big advantage of the mac is you can have the best of both worlds :)
I use both day in day out and either is a good choice.
I've got a few new toys and complete rejigged my setup and office space so it was time to post a few new pictures:

Its very comfy and looks great!

Man that setup looks nice. The only bit that doesn't quite fit would be the X800GTO graphics card I suppose.
Is that LG a LCDTV or just a TV? If it is a LCDTV could you tell me which one?
The x800 gto2 was the most powerful card that would fit in the pc at the time as its very small in length as well as being a single slot card. It plays all the games I play fine so I've never seen the need to upgrade. :)
Its an LCD TV , its a 17in widescreen number, not sure what model without pulling the whole thing out.
i've got a iMac 24" and a macbook pro 15" 2.33 Core 2 Duo 2 GB ram
Ordered a (White) MacBook today: 2.0ghz Core 2 Duo, 1gb DDR2, 80gb HDD & DVD-RW
Not bad for £580!

17" eMac G4 700mhz 512MB
Plus my gaming pc, which changes spec almost as often as I change clothes :P

G3 Powerbook (pismo) 550mhz G4 upgrade 1gb ram 80gb 5200rpm hdd
and a couple of older iBooks 1 key lime clamshell and one old faulty icebook(400mhz G3?).
I am soon to be the owner of a lovely new(ish*) iMac whilst I don't perticularly like the design of the new one, or the white one that preceded it(I think the G4 iMac is the best looking mac ever), I do want the power only the intel macs can give me, heck I may even save up and get a macbook pro and retire my old pismo :)
*depends on how much money I can save on ebay, if not they do look attractive new at £800 for the 20"

Just gone from a first gen macbook, to a brand new macbook pro :)
Just got me a 24" 2.4GHz iMac and a black MacBook! Well just before Christmas, anyway.
Taken them both up to 2GB of DDR2 and upgraded both to Leopard too, although the iMac has Vista installed as well using Boot Camp.
Really must update my signature!
Love your set up, Gordy. It looks great! I wish I had a desk like that lol.
My setup has changed quite a bit in the last week or two.
Firstly I've replaced my Apple Macbook Pro with a newer model. I'd had the old one for 2 years so it was time for an upgrade. The new one is one of the latest penryn ones with an LED screen. Its a great little machine.
Here's a pic of the swap over happening:
http://gordyhand.co.uk/gallery/d/5544-1/DSCF6614.jpg
I've also treated myself to a griffin elevator and a new apple keyboard. The griffin elevator really helps my neck and the apple keyboard is great to type on. The last purchase was an apple iPhone as the £100 off offer was just too tempting!
Here is a shot of it all in place:
http://gordyhand.co.uk/gallery/d/5546-1/DSCF6629.jpg
Also in shot is my HP all in one printer, sony lcd tv logitech mx revolution mouse and netgear wireless N router.
...and picture of familiar landmark ;)
you took that?
I currently have a 15-inch MacBook Pro (2.2GHz Santa Rosa version).
I brought it last September before uni (with 15% discount, £58 Applecare upgrade and £85 off my 160GB iPod Classic) and it's a great machine.
I also have a PowerMac G4 Cube with 17" LCD Studio display, which unfortunately doesn't get much use nowadays.
Before that, I had a PowerBook G4 (15" 1.33GHz) and iMac G3 DV 400MHz in grape!
My current setup:

These two are attached to the iMac offering 2TB of external storage,
http://www.bsodmike.com/gallery2/d/20925-1/DSC03060.jpg
The MBP is currently keeping the printer company elsewhere in my flat. It shares the printer over WiFi.
Mike wouldn't it be cheaper to get a wifi printer or airport base station? Seems expensive to have a mbp just for a printer :D
How's the iMac with dual screens, I've got a iMac here at the moment and its a tasty machine. Worked out reasonably priced after quidco and pcworld pricing cock up :D
Gordy, ha! The MBP goes on printer duty when I'm in, but gets a full work out when I'm in the lab. I should be setting up my IDE shortly though and will be using the laptop a fair bit as I have some development to complete for my project.
Mine is an older 2.8 extreme mind you, so I'm not sure if it has *the* latest specs in terms of video output, but, the dual screen setup has been running great. I can move 720p clips across the displays seamlessly and even 1080p clips don't seem to mind this.
I tend to have two firefox windows on both displays at any given time; this way I can enjoy the best of portrait and landscape layouts...
The imacs are great - got one here. Energy efficient too apparently.
Got macbook white, which is now pratically yellow!
I recently moved from My Mac Pro to a Macbook pro. Here's my current setup.

Performa 5320...
Yeah, a I own Macintosh (Even though its as old as me)
Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
It rocks :D
MacBook Air, 1.8GHz (not SSD), White iMac 2.16GHz Core2Duo/2GiB, 2 Mac Minis (one with 1.66GHz Core Duo/512MiB one with 1.66GHz Core Duo/1GiB). Also have an iPhone 3g!
Slightly modified my collection; I now have:
- iMac G5
- iMac Intel
- MacBook
- Apple TV
- iPhone 8G
I currently have:
* Powerbook G4 12" - Rev. c, 1.33GHz. 2004. My day-to-day machine & will travel with me to my grave.
* iBook G4 12" 1.2GHz - spares donor for the above; suffering from GPU solder failure. I'm considering options.
* iMac G3 (Graphite DV) 400MHz. It's halfway-headless at the moment, waiting on delivery of a suitable PSU. I haven't done Project Fishbowl yet so that's my next task...
ibook g4 1.2 12", updated to 1.25GB RAM, dual layer DVD-writer and 160GB disk (which needs replacing with a 250GB in the near future - that's a bloody awful job)
Mac Mini - G4 1.5GHz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD :embarrassed:
Just used for surfing and iTunes mainly.
Recently had it apart to try and diagnose a fault (which turned out to be software related):

MP and MBP, photo editing at home and away!! :D
I've made a few changes to my setup.
Firstly I've picked up a new Apple Macbook, which is an amazing little laptop. It certainly breaks new ground. I've also bought a Apple Cinema Display. It's also great. I'd love one of the new 24in ones, but they are bit too pricey! I've also got a new HP all in one printer.

http://www.gordyhand.co.uk/gallery/d...1/DSC00158.jpg
great set up there. liking the ACD - but think I'll stick with my equally nice dell 24" for the mo :)
have to agree with you on the new macbooks - over the previous white/black plastics at least it is a great improvement. I'll have to clear out my desk and get a pic up now I suppose too...!
agreed, a colleague got himself 2 mac pros, a 20 and 23" monitors - basically he had to spend the money...the cable tidynessness of it all is quite amazing!
Macbook Pro 2.33 Core2Duo (old aluminum style), 3gb, 250gb HDD, Matt screen :D
Blimey Gordy, that's inspirational. I need to tidy my desk a little...
(Add Macbook Pro Late 2007, 2.4GHz, 256MB NVidia to my profile :) )
How much was the Cobra office seat? :)
MacBook Pro 2.2GHz, Intel Core Duo, 4 GB RAM, 110 GB HDD (soon to be upgraded!) and I love it to bits. However, I've been doing some drooling over the new unibody MacBook Pro......
Gordy, I love your setup...it's well *clean*!! Just took some shots of my 'work in progress' yesterday...

I will update this thread when the new Mac Pro & ACD arrive - probably in 2 weeks time. 8-day build time thanks a silly Airport Express card. :censored: Sold the above Mac on eBay for £550, so I'm currently using Vista on an Advent laptop - its actually not as bad as I thought though.
Thanks. It's a tip today, but I need to do a reorganise as I'm not liking the current layout. I have a new phone and funky picture holder that needs to be squeezed in.
Looks nice. That desk looks like a big chunk of wood. Where did you get it?
my g/f has one

How can you guys use the apple 'mighty' mouse? It annoyed me Immensely!
Give me a nice M$ or Logitech anyday.
Thanks Gordy, not a million miles away from looking similar to yours - although not as custom!
I purchased the wood top from IKEA about 3 years ago, think it was about £100. It's just strips of pine laminated together, 2" thick. Turned out very good value for money and it fits the space perfectly - just under 2m long.
@rastamanblues: I know exactly what you mean. Right-click is 'tempremental' and I won't get into the scroll ball - but still I use it daily.
Here are some updated pics of my Mac setup. I also added a couple of photos to the walls to break it up a little, still minimalist though.

Well working backwards from my most current. Pre-unibody (Sept '08) MacBook Pro 15.4" matte screen with 4GB crucial RAM 200GB 7200rpm, a Marathon PowerRack G3 400 Mhz studio rackmount (genuine mac components in a Marathon case with noisy fans) 256MB OSX 10.3.4 and a Mac PowerBook G3 Lombard Bronze 333 Mhz 192MB running OSX 10.3.4 and system 9.2 which I'll be using to link with and file transfer Bernoulli drive data from a Mac Quadra 900 (graphic design set-up) running system 7.something (I'm going to be upgrading it to system 8.1) at an acoustics firm who resolutely blanked the Mac!:angst:
Hey, new boy here.
I (will) have a new unibody MacBook 2.4Ghz, with 4gb RAM - arrives Wed/Thurs!
Bought for work but will become surgically attached to me I suspect.
My first real Mac - I also have 2 hackintoshes (one MSI Wind U100 and one custom-built PC by me) but they're too much hassle in the end, so bought the real thing!
Also have a iPhone 3G 8gb - on T-Mobile ;)
So, yeah, hi! :)
I've got my trusty 2008 edition Macbook Pro, it's pretty much fully maxed out (including a 256GB OCZ Vertex SSD). I prefer the looks of this Macbook to the newer one... I think it's got a timeless look and feel to it :)
I've got this one, for production its phenominal: http://www.enemyforces.net/firearms/ingram.jpg
Having only just come to the end of my time at uni I thought I'd take the opportunity to purchase a mac before I left.
I was going to go for the macbook white, but my mate pushed me to the Macbook Pro 13.3" (brand new) :) I'm so glad he pushed me to it, because I had a bit of luck.
When I received the macbook and unpacked it, I noticed 3 small dents in the bottom corner (forming, almost a rectangle), I wasn't pleased, so rang up Apple, and they immediately offered me a partial refund (as altho I am normally anal about these sort of things, its on the bottom, and anything to make it cheaper, so long as inside and the top looks ok, is good with me )
This linked in with the Snow Leopard Up-to-date Program (£7.95) and the free iPod (iPod 16gb Nano) Back-to-school programme.
Which made it a ridiculously cheap macbook, having sold the ipod, should get the cheque through shortly, and I get the next OS. So I'm happy :)
Especially considering I managed to sell my 3 yo white macbook (core duo) for £500 (on ebay), it was a decent upgrade, for another 3 year warranty :p

Man that is a clean desk, need to get some better speakers. The built in MacBook (White/2.4Ghz/4Gb/320Gb) ones are ok just not loud enough to hear clearly.
Definitely worth investing. Since having them I've enjoyed listening to music and watching films far more.
After six months in the sandpit I figure I deserve a treat, so I now have brand spanking new MacBook Pro 17" with the 2.8GHz processor and the glossy screen.
Yeah, I know I should have held off for Snow Leopard, but where's the fun in that? :stupid:
I've got:
- 16Gb iPhone 3G
- 1.6GHz Core Duo Mini
- 2.2GHz MacBook
- Dell Mini 9 running 10.5.8
Until a few days ago the Mini was dead - I was told the logic board was knackered but it turns out it was just a failed HD so I've replaced that and it's all good! I've now got the Mini coupled up to my Drobo (filled with 4 x 2Tb HD's) and once I've finished copying stuff over it'll be replacing my TeraStation pro.
/rotten egg @Jay
My collection:
iBook G4 (Broken & in bits somewhere in the loft)
Macbook 2.2Ghz
Mac Pro Dual 2.8Ghz Xeon (as per my profile)
8GB iPhone Classic
16GB iPhone 3G
32GB iPhone 3G S
I might upgrade my macbook to a 13" pro later in the year, or early next year as all the plastic is starting to break on my white one, and the display annoys me with the lack of consistent colours..
My Collection:
512MB Gen1 (I think) iPod shuffle, used maybe twice...
Well I've finally pulled my finger out and taken some shots of my new office.
My previous office was one of the largest rooms in the house and was a complete waste of such a large space. It also was our spare bedroom so I had to work around chaos when people were staying. So the plan was to create an all new office in what was the nursery.
I took everything back to the floorboards and laid all new cabling and completely redecorated. It was a royal pain in the backside, but well worth the effort. I wanted the end result to have as few cables and other rubbish on show as possible. I'm very happy with the results.
To answer as many of the questions you may have I've put some info by all the pics.

A general shot of the desk, it's an Ikea Mikael. After building two desk for my previous office I decided to go down the ikea route this time as it was quicker and had a better ability to hide the cables.

A bit of a wider shot showing the Ikea besta cupboard on the right it stores lots of my files and other odds and ends. The Car on the top is actually a computer. It's one of several I've built, this being the final and most perfect one. It certainly catches most guests eye first.

Here you can see my setup. It's a unibody Apple Macbook hooked up to a 20in cinema display (Mounted on a Humanscale M7 Vesa mount). I've also got the superb apple keyboard and logitech mx revolution mouse. The irreplacable Apple iPhone 3G, along with a BT Reveal telephone
