nice
wish i could cave in and buy the dual 2.5 g5 with 30" cinma display, but my finaces dont go that far
*starts to dream of the prossing power for foldaing at home that a dual 2.5 g5 can do*
well I dont know much about a mac... How do they relate to say a P4 3.8 GHz? And how do you play windows games on one?
A) Spanks it
B) You don't (Without getting into emulation)

(")_(")
They are for one nice n' fast (in more than one way too) and you have BSD running under the hood, which is ace - but I don't play games, don't have the time for it so it isn't a problem for me. BUT if I do want to game I have my gamecube.
As for comparing - I don't think it is really possible. We are talking of two entirely different systems - it's like comparing oranges to apples (ohh a sad pun ) x86 CPU vs. PPC RISC processor, diff OSes and for one OS X manages memory so well and the apps are enhanced for each platform as well.
All I can say is that my 12" pbook g4 here whupped my P4 3.0 when compared to the number of things I was doing on this. I.e. I have like 20 apps running all the time including Mathematica, Photoshop, Azureus and much much more.
Ohh and Mac's don't crash...no really....I mean like ever unless it's a hardware fault (foobar anyone )

Ideally I would probably get a dual 2 and the 23", but tbh for the stuff I do the dual 2 isn't exactly 'needed' right now. Instead what I do need is a lot of ram!Originally Posted by Elspuddy
The 1.8 comes with a paltry 256MB of ram, in two sticks of 128MB First of all, I'm not sure who would want to buy 2x 128MB of DDR400 RAM so selling 'em off will be a problem. Tbh Apple should allow people to buy the system WITHOUT ram, rather than forcing ppl to add the ram so it makes life *easy* for them to test
Anyways, via Crucial a 512MB stick comes to about 65quid so 1gig is around 130ish...Need to buy some asap
Of course my future upgrade to this system would be a 23" display. However I may end up selling the G5 sometime June/July 2005 - by which time you guys would hear from me in the 'for sale' thread.
I hear you screaming - "Why sell it?!?!"; I have no where to keep it during summer and therefore I may sell it and buy a 'newer' one when I get back in Sept 05
As for delivery, Apple says shipping on or before the 29th of Oct (that's this comming Friday) - so I'm hopefully expecting delivery on the 1st or 2nd of November.

if its a power mac why not keep the 256 mb and stick in a few more stick ( theres 8 slots right? )
the 1.8's (& 1.6's) only have 4 ram slots, so you can do what i did and stick a couple of 512's in the remaining slots and keep the 128's (1.25Gb has a nice ring to it, not as nice as 2Gb though ), or be stuck with a couple of sticks that are pretty hard to shift.
I'm kinda annoyed that they've brought out the single 1.8's at such a great price, seeing as i got my single 1.6 2 months before they revised the range, as it puches the resale value of mine down even more! but that's just my wallet talking
As you guys have pointed out I was thinking of doing this, infact I might do this. With the 1.6 I have back home I added 2x 256 sticks o' corsair and it hasn't complained or anything but I guess what is imporant is that each 'pair' is matched - not that all the pairs are the same.
Makes more sense than trying to shift them I guess.
Doug: Ouch, that's nasty. Apple normally make sort of a noise or at least AppleInsider etc do before the product line up changes but this revision was quite a suprise. I for one really hope they decide to bring out some form of G5 cube tho
Re-sale value: tbh Apple's have the best resale value out there and it should hold out pretty decently for about a year tops. Say 60 - 65% after about a year. What's your take?
Bsodmike: That would be fantastic. However, the G5 processor would not be able to be passively cooled like the G4 Cube was, denting it's appeal. Also, it would be horribly expensive.
I would like an Apple iMac G5 though...
Well How about the current 'sort' of cooling the iMac G5 has but inside a cube!
Voila - easy to upgrade:
GFX,
Ram (bigger headroom maybe?)
more than one hard-drive, how about 4x SATA drives woooo!
one or 2 PCI-X slots?
mmmm *drooool*
I guess that this is the point where I would be jumping up and down!
TNT has picked up the G5 from Ireland where the leprachauns do all the assembly etc..note: not chinese immigrants that get paid $0.01 an hour!
I'm quite impressed. I placed the order on the 20th at around 4pm and I removed the modem, added the bluetooth module and changed the GFX for a 9600XT w/128meg 'o ram - I'm expecting delivery tomorrow or Thursday...will post back when it arrives.
What is also impressive is that shipping is free...Couriering a box of it's size and weight (easily 30 - 40KG or more) would easily cost enough to make your head spin...I'm stunned!
And ohh...I got this via UK Higher Education, so the price is discounted too of course
Will look forward to hearing what it's like. Sounds like exactly the same spec I'll be ordering in the new year, unless they have a single 2GHz by then.
Got my 12" 1GHz iBook approx 4 months ago now and haven't looked back. When I use my PC (like now) I'm shocked that it will randomly reboot for no good reason! I used to think that it was just part and parcel of using a computer - not any more!
I woke up today at around 8am and hurried downstairs after taking a wash to mee the porter. The porter aggreed to call me when he sees the TNT truck..I then called TNT and told them to tell the driver to meet the porter...
At around 9:30am I'm sitting in my room using the pbook and for some reason I looked out my window and I saw the TNT truck drive past!...He had obviously NOT been given the message and came looking for my building...
Ran down and picked up the G5, and without further ado here it is:
I then immediately proceeded to remove the side panel and set about installing the new RAM (I know this was risky but I did it ):
Notice the new kind of cover over the processor heatsink and how the mainboard is that much smaller! ref: 1.6Ghz G5 @ Home in Sri Lanka
RAM installed - 1.25GB
Top portion showing the bluetooth module...
Radeon 9600XT w/ 128MB DDR RAM, interestingly it's passively cooled...
The Seagate 80GB SATA HDD...
Rear shot:
Notice how the latch also acts as the lock - pretty spiffy!
And the full setup!

cool! interesting to see the mew motherboard, it's quite a bit smaller than the one in mine.
It truly is a silent machine...I'm astonished...I can remember the 1.6 @ home being this quiet even...however, the clacking of the HDD (when in full use) tends to shatter this silence now and then heh.
Been having a few problems with the superdrive but I think I've sorted it. If not it seems like I'll have to wait for Apple to release a new firmware for either the Superdrive and/or PMU in the G5...
I've disabled 'put hdds to sleep' and set 'sleep G5' to never...hopefully this should stop the Superdrive from going into permanent hibernation.
So far so good...
