    older ibooks?

i'm thinking about maybe selling my pc and going for a 2nd hand ibook.
but i'm wondering what the min spec i should be looking at is? the only thing i really use my pc for is msn/internet, some office use(not very often) thats about it really.
so i really don't need anything top spec. really want a mac as i liked them when i used them at college. and a laptop would be great.

only want a 12inch screen. cd drive won't matter as i will use an external dvd-rw(can i?) ram whatever the ram is i would add a 512mb stick.

so would something like a 500 or 700mhz G3 do me? only thing is i don't won't it to be really slow. also can you use a external hard drive? as the older macs only have 10gb HD's.

would the tiger os run on these or are you better off with an older one?

oh and does the little apple logo on the top of the laptop light up like on the powerbooks?(looks cool lol)

oh i would be looking at £400 tops for the ibook the ram and everything will be ontop of this

    thanks

Why not save up and get a new iBook? They start at £699 and will be covered by a warantee and last a little longer.

400 quid would get you quite a decent one.

there was one for sale on ocuk forums for 450, for a g4 based 1ghz 12"

My new powerbook one lights up . I don't think we will be seeing a G5 ibook, or powerbook for a while. Apparenly there are big heat issues with the G5 processors and they are having trouble getting them portable. However, as a recent convert i can recommend a mac lappy heartily!

I have personally given up on ebay, but it might be worth a look. Get a magazine such as mac format as they will have a list of retailers that do refurbished/ 2nd hand macs. Also try the mac shop today for 2nd hand and refurbs.

ive been thinking of getting one of these little beauties too, i found some refurbs here you might be interested in them too, they seem to be at reasonable prices? £530 for a g4 1ghz, would that cover the same general needs as above? maybe with a spot of photoshoping too?

Pather or Tiger, you'd still need 512MB min for smooth operation...don't expect snazzy Dashboard to be all that smooth or Expose for that matter. Depends on how much you want to do on your Mac really.
