Don't want to buy a rotten Apple....

I am looking to buy an apple mac for editing purposes and music making. What is the best to get? I am new to macs and am unsure if they have good upgrading possibilities:

I have been looking at the imac G5 which sells for £1000 giving me a screen, 160GB Hdisk, 2ghz processor, 512 ram etc compared to the Powermac for £1000 that gives me a tower, 1.8ghz processor, 256 ram and 80GB Hdisk.
I can't seem to figure out what advantages I have with less spec for the same price in a powermac G5 with no screen compared to the Imac G5 with a screen.

Defo go for a Power Mac.

With Music stuff you may well need an external audio card to do anything decent, and most semi/pro audio cards use PCI slots. As far as I'm aware, an iMac doesn't have the slots you'd need...

Indeed, iMacs are fine for plain old home computing, but the price advantage of them is soon negated come upgrade time for thigs like video or sound cards. Also, they have an increased cache I think, which may make all the difference.

Also bear in mind that the processors are all fairly speedy, so perhaps add as much memory as possible first, and look to see what processor you get for your budget.

Ok, powermac it is, but where to get them cheaper and re-furbished?

EDIT:Should have specified, I'm looking to do Video Editing, music is just a side project.

Got a dual 2 Ghz powermac from the new Apple store in Bluewater. Got the 8% ed discount, and a couple of t-shirts.
So far great, really quiet and plays the high def stuff even 1080p very well.
Now to hook it up to my 32 LCD TV :-)
