    iConfused

    Hi Guys

One of your fellow forum lurkers is my other half and will be celebrating a birthday soon. I wanted to get him a gadget that allows him to play his iPod in our car. So I went online to the iTunes website ... and from what I can see they sell a cassette gadget thingy that will do the trick. Prob is that we have a new Golf ... so no cassettle slot - just CD's. Am I being incredibly blonde and missing the obvious ?

    Please help.

    Use one of these:
    iTrip

You need a cassette player for the one you mentioned, with the itrip it uses an FM transmitter so no wires or anything - just turn the car stereo on and away you go.

Itrip - so so, dodgy at best considering that the iTrip stations come in shuffling (unless you make a playlist of your full library, and that's lame imo). Also in places with LOT of radio traffic the FM signal gets highly distorted...

Get a Belkin TuneDok and car charger for iPod. connect the line out to the line in of the stereo system, works wonders

    Something like this ^^

That gold jack is connected to the head unit (Auxiliary input) and the head unit in turn is connected to the amp (basic installs do not require this, as the headunit *is* the amp)...much larger bandwidth to play with rather than restricting your self to FM.

A couple people have gone the extra bit and 'fully integrated the iPod in their car by 'altering' the ashtray but this doesn't leave much room when you upgrade your iPod...

I don't think that's a real issue to be honest, yeah they're illegal but i don't think the HM Police really give a damn...

What's this, fill me in on it...is this the one where you can control the iPod from the headunit?

    Update:

    http://www.alpine-usa.com/products/l...h_kca-420i.htm

Interesting. Personally I prefer having a full touch-sensitve head unit, and I've got an AirClick on the way that'll sort out my iPod control-from-the-wheel issue...

The alpine head is good. The sound quality is good and it is easy to control. However, my wife nearly crashed whilst changing song. I think something as complicated as an ipod may be a bit risky in a car.

Or rather than an FM transmitter, you can get an fm modulator from maplins for about 25 quid that will plug into the aerial connector and come through as a radio station without actually transmitting.

Bsodmike, although a good suggestion, stock golf CD head units do not come with a line in.

Menthel, yes using the touch wheel is difficult while driving, which is why I'm going for an AirClick by griffin....stap the wheel, and easy control

Well blow me over with a burp ... you guys are outstanding. Ask a simple question - expect a simple answer. Not a chance - get a step by step account (with photos!) to show you how whilst at the same time keeping honest and abreast of competitve solutions. Nice one - thanks guys. Think Im going to go with bsodmikes recommendation.

As i said, you wont have an Aux input on your stock VW headunit (assuming of course it is stock)

Sorry ham(p)ster (heh) - as herc has pointed out it depends on the headunit, but I would be rather mad with VW if they installed a really cheap headunit in the first place!

    >> For my Polo they did, but this is something I considered when I got it, and had already decided that I was going to rip the car to bits to install this...

Some people might find it crazy to do that to a car the day after it was purchased...took 3 days to install it all though...what torture!
