Oh my god who let The Animus into an apple based thread, Mr Anti Apple if ever there was one!

I personally have an iPod mini and find it a marvellous little thing, it plays my music well and I find iTunes easy to use, especially podcasts from radio 4 and 5. I don't buy music from it though, just rip my own cd's. I had a 3g ipod before this and it did have a slightly poop battery life, but my mini is much better. I also understand from my mate that his nano has good battery life and that he has had no problems from it. Don't forget you here more about the problems than you do the sucesses as people tend to moan loudly and praise in their own heads. However, the final choice is up to you, go out and try all the available and see which one you prefer!

Menthal you know my beef with apple, if someone said they wanted to control my experiance from beging to end i'd assume they were going to put me into a gas chamber.

Did you look at the HD3, smaller, lighter than the mini, with 20gig capacity, and 30 hours batterylife. Problem is truely rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish software. But I don't have much beef with it only that it can't import from anything other than wma/mp3/PCM (wav). Not to mention the build quality of it means it just feals better. But theres no click wheel. As i use a remote on mine (used to have it just under my coller, when i had hippy hair people couldn't see i was wearing it, thus, not know to mug me). Thats the problem i have, why is a mini better?! Its a 3rd of the batterylife, and a 5th of the capacity?! How on earth can it be considered better?!

Davos, my god, if only i'd had the forsight to buy an apple ipod, then my friend would love me as more than just a friend, and i wouldn't be sat here alone, i'd be having hot sex right now, because i'd be cool. Why would i hate the fact i don't own one? The last player i spent over £300 on including remote + headphones (headphones were a gift thou), if i wanted one, i could of easily hopped onto my segway trimmed my beard into a little triangle shape, and gone to the apple store.

I too used to hate Ipods.

I have looked at the new sony 20GB player and i dont like the screen (oh great, it has slightly more visability, but i can see fine) or the player, it is bigger than the HD5 and very plastic.

The HD5 is a very nice player, nice body, small witha good battery. But, it has a small screen (contradictry mabe, but you have seen the screen on the new sony player and is is weird) and it has already been replaced. I am also doubtful to how good the new connect replacement for soncistage will be, sony can make proper software, where as itunes is good.

Also, fo the ipod, the new video ipod is thinner (not wider as some think, its actually the same size as the old ipod) looks better than the old ipods and HD5 imho, comes in black and of course plays video (this may seem like a gimmic but it is a feature wheather you like it or not). Also for £200 (im a student) the ipod is 30GB

When it comes to batter life, i am not going to listen to more than 10hours of ipod music in a day, and an ipod should get this at least (14hr quoted). And i can charge it when i get home. I see not much need for large battery (and have owned a sony mindisk player, which i have now, and dont like it btw)

As for the earphones, they are just as bad as the ones that come with the sony, but i can replace them and i would not spend over £30 on headphones, and i doubt i would be able to tell much difference.

If you can find me a really good deal on the HD5 or convince me that the new sony is not crap.

Also, have you had any experience with toshiba players, as thay seem to have some nice players out now. This one: http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/sound-a.../359695/prices EDIT: For £15 more i can get the ipod with 10Gb more space and all its features.

I used to like iriver but thier new players are ugly, but ill try to find one to try.

The main thing is: All these other non ipod players are aroung £180, whereas the ipod is £200 and for that £20 i get alot of features and upgrades.

the only thing it falls back on is battery life comapred to the HD5, but this is not a huge bother for me.

I beilve the toshiba is using the screen of the SP5 mobile phone, which is really impressive (for a phone).

If batterylife isn't a problem for you, thats fine, but remeber battery's go to half the life expentancy quite quickly.

Earphones, look at http://www.excessnet.com/excess-uk/K...s___Black.html those are the best you get for that money, by far. If you get those with a sony player, obviously you can normally get a better than normal deal. (if your buying a remote even more so).

Also consider service, just ask about dead ipods, and ipod batteries (oh, consumable iteam eh, not covered by warenty, but isn't serviceable by end user! thats good!). So make sure you like your retailer for service.

iRiver's are ugly imo, but it dosen't bother me as a player hsould live in a pocket, only a remote should be got out. Do also take note that their software is by far and away the best.

Also do you want to be able to use it as a mobile HDD? Some players let you do this, some dont.

as for price, the HD5 is £150 acording to a switfh froogle. With the HD3 going for £120 on ebay brand new as people clear their stock (which really is a bargin, but has terrible software).

But if batterylife really isn't a bother for you, then all the players really are much of a muchness.

Theanimus, you do realise you can use the newer software with the hd3? I personally dont think its that bad, its certainly no worse than itunes (which ill go on record as hating with a great passion, winamp forever!)

Ive got a zen touch, mainly bought because it was cheapest, but theres no way id saw it for an ipod, a hd5 maybe. Ideal in my opinion would be a hd3 with the screen from the e1000 or whatever its called, im not fussed about video, i have psp/magician for that.

If it were my choice now id go for an iriver, or a hd3 if it were my own money (since they are incredibly cheap at the mo)

i don't se how people can say the ipod looks better than sony's latest offering!
    http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page...=376&pa=genbrw
    its just amazing looking.

I would go on record saying that itunes is also very poor software, but the sony one is also very poor. The software for both are so poor, but itunes has a marketplace integration (can you say anti-trust?) which like most things which end in antitrust suites is actually very useful for ma+pa users.

But if your a good computer user, its not much of problem you get used to dealing with its stupidity. Only the iRiver can coupe with my music collection (i have to have music when i code, i code too much, and spend some of that money on music, too keep me in code... music and jaffa cakes). Because its some 200gig mostly in lossless on a network share. I also have a lot of small people's LPs which often aren't on CD databases.

but trust me, the NWA3000, if only i had a reason to upgrade to it!

(you want to buy an HD3, only one scratch on it )

do sony still use sonicstage? becuase that put me off sony software for life tbh.

i dont mind itunes as such, i used it for months before i got my ipod anyway, so it wasn't as if apple were forcing me to use their software.

I cant seem to get an HD5 for less than £170, froogle lies about prices. Those £150 links are actually over £200 or dont exist.

I know about the HD5, i was looking at it before it came out and i have convinced two of my friends to buy one. I suppose £20 more over the new 6GB sony is worth it, better batter, nice case etc.

One thing i did notice on my friends ones is that it is not very loud, will that improve with better headphones? Like the ones you linked to?

Also, is the new sony 20GB bigger than the HD5 or is it just me being stupid? Im goign to go to johnlewis or somewhere and have a look at it again.

The volume is some weird eu directive, you can get round it by going into the admin mode and remove it. (its like a ps cheat code, think i still have the instructions from when i did it to the gfs, pm me if anyone wants them)

Indeed Herulach is right. Its very easy to "delimit" it, i don't understand the regulations because the volume depends on your ear phones! Stupidity from the EU, gosh what a surprise.

Its worth noting that sony's HDx has better quality audio output than the ipod's but for me, even with my loverly Shure headphones (which i wouldn't say are worth the £100!) I can't hear the difference. So enless your planning to use it as a media player don't bother.

I won't post in the new thread, you already know my verdict (handle em, get the one u like the feal of).
