Scriptable thumbnailer?

Just wondering if any of you guys have come across a shell scriptable thumbnailing program on your travels in mac-land?

I'm trying to work on a cron-able script that will generate thumbnails for a directory of images, then ftp the whole lot over to a webserver, but I'm having trouble tracking down a nice thumbnailer program..

Any ideas?
