My sister has a 3rd gen 20gb "firewire" model ipod, because she had a usb 1.1 laptop back in the day.
She was thinking of just buying a usb sync/charge cable for her ipod since usb 2.0 is now plenty fast.
Would this work right away? I was under the impression that a firewire model ipod wouldn't work with usb easily, i hope i'm wrong though
Unfortunately 3g iPods will not charge via USB2, they will only synch. I encountered this problem

It should do if you have all the latest firmware updates...but whats wrong with the firewire connection?
Well, she was hoping she could charge and sync the ipod at the same time, but i suppose since the usb doesnt charge 3rd gens...
i still prefer to use a more familiar connection, and since her cable needs replacing anyway.

You can buy a "iPod dock connector to Firewire and USB" cable. You plug the firewire port into your firewire plug charger and the USB port into your PC and you can charge + sync

Do not purchase it with the USB charger tho....because that will use up the USB connector and you should already have a firewire charger-plug that came with the 3G.

Yes, but then you could only charge it or sync it, not both at the same time.
To charge + sync simultaneously with a 3G you either need a powered Firewire port on your PC or the cable above with the firewire plug charger.
