Right, my daughter purchased this second hand iMac. Trouble is it doesn't boot to either a log-in screen or desktop. What I get is first this

which is where it stops. The hands on the little watch icon don't move, the mouse is active, but thiat is all there is. Tried leaving it for an hour or so, but nowt. Any ideas peeps? I'm a Mac n00b

do you have the hardware cds that came with the imac? if yes, run the hardware diagnostic program from the CD, i think you have to hold down "c" when booting with the cd in.
Looks like a software corruption to me tho.. you might have to reinstall the OS, wouldnt be a bad thing putting osX on that thing anyway.

Ah, the joys of OS 9

/puts Retro hat on.

Try booting up holding Shift down. This starts up without extenstions, and is in many ways similar to Safe Mode on Windows machines.

Also check the RAM is seated correctly, it can become dislodged on the iMacs.

Best bet though is to re-install the OS if you have the disks.

Cheers chaps, got a copy of OSX 10.2 from fleabay & installed that, cured the prob Mind you, kinda liking it myself, might take it off her hands & have it as a simple surfin machine & maybe install Ubuntu on it for fun

Having said that, she just called to say now when she switches it on the screen remains blank & lifeless but she can hear it boot & drive activity etc ????????

I'm taking this as being a firmware related broblem after a bit of googling. But how to revive the poor old thing? is it now scrap or is this salvagable?

Maybe it's time for a newer mac? Something iMac should work well...

If we could afford it, it'd be an option I'm lubbin da mac.

Still, after a bit of searching i've started it while holding down the command-option-p-r keys simultaneously, this apperently 'zaps the pram'. Now, how do i update the firmware?

I have the OSX cd's handy

Trying to install the firmware but it cant find 'classic' ? Do I need to install version 9 of the o/s? Where would i get that from?

*edit*Apparently we need the OS 9.2.2 Software Restore CDs that originally came with the machine, which of course we dont have. Or alternatively I start every time using the command-option-p-r key combo.

*edit2*What I seem to need is a copy of the Classic system folder which I can then copy to the System folder of my mac & then change the permissions on it. Anyone help with this? Would pay postage/media costs.
