    Dead Battery

Today i locked my keys in the car and i have no spare,Couldn't get a locksmith out for over 5 hours. The Engine wasn't running but it was in ignition mode for 5 hours

Once i got the keys back the car wouldn't start because of a weak battery,Just wondering if i leave it for a few hours should it work in the morning? as I've never had problems before.

I have no jump start packs

Sometimes a battery will recover after a few minutes, but if the car does not start after a 5 minute wait, the battery will not recover without a boost.

If I where you I would knock on your neighbours door and ask for a jump start now rather than tomorrow morning. Once you have the car started, you should go for a 10 minute drive to recharge the battery.

You could jump start it, in which case you need to get someone to push it while its in gear as you turn the engine over, not forced to work though, you might also find it a bit of a struggle to push with one person. Just ring the AA, that or get it jump started.

If it's a petrol car a bump start or jump start should work fine. If it's a diesel you're probably out of luck.

I left the sidelights on in my mum's diesel Clio last summer and it wouldn't start even with some serious bumping down a big steep hill. The RAC got it going in 5 minutes with a booster pack. In November though it properly died; we were about to buy it a new battery when I noticed that the electrolyte levels in the battery were very low. 69p for a bottle of distilled water from Tescos and an overnight charge sorted it right out and it's been fine ever since. It's well worth checking.

If it has a cat converter, starting it like that is probably a bad idea, though Ive never tryed, and my book tells me in big bold letters not to.

My car manual also tells me in big letters not to jump start it (tis a turbo diesel).

The RAC laughed, towed it up the slightests of inclines and rolled it slowly backwards - it started without even a noticable halting of momentum.

disconnect the battery from the car electrics, remove if neccessary. Hook up the leads on the charger. CHarge away. Itll probably take overnight to give it a good going over.

Nope. You must have a contact somewhere.

I always take the battery out of the car myself, but up to you if you just want to disconnect it. The leads from the charger go positive to positive, negative to negative as you say.

Does this mean my battery's now dead?

That or you shorted it somewhere when reconnecting. Likely a duff battery though, do you know anyone with a clamp multimeter? if so turn the ignition of and check the cables out the battery to see if something is drawing power.

Either your battery is dead, or your alternator isn't charging it. Check the fluid levels in the battery for a start, you can top them up with a bottle of distilled water if they're low (70p in Tescos).
