VW Servicing - worth it?

Hi All,
I have a 2001 Passat TDi. I'm seriously considering swapping it in the near future for an Passat estate (the amount of stuff you have to carry around with babies is ridiculous).

It's just had it's big 80000 mile service (actually done at 72000 miles), and it cost about £500 quid - including having a few bits and pieces done.

Is there much point in continuing to have VW service the car? I'm guessing now it's almost 6 years old, the value of a VW service doesn't make much difference to a 2nd hand price? TBH the only reason I did it this long is that it had an extended VW warranty which has just expired.

as far as im aware, if a car im looking at to buy has a full complete dealer service history it would probabily, mean that id pay a little extra to get it.

But how much extra? A couple of hundred? Basically I'm looking at about 150-200 quid every time I get a main dealer service over a local mechanic.

Personally it would be the other way around for me. There's nothing to suggest that official dealers will service a car any better than anyone else (apart from having a deal stripped from them, but really, how many of them really stick to the guidelines?). I find a proper local garage, with minimal turnover, often provides far better support. It's probably different with bikes though, given some peoples pure love for the things.

^ agreed - at the car's age/mileage, go local - unless you're about to sell it after the next service - FVWSH should make it easier to sell (if not actually add value) when it comes to doing a deal..

On reflection I reckon I'll sell it soon - definitely before the next service. Just got back from the folks' for Easter with the Mrs and the baby and the car was absolutely RAMMED with stuff - we even had to leave some behind!

Strange. My parents managed trips from Edinburgh to Aberdeen with a baby in a mini in the late '70s quite regularly. And now a Passat estate is needed? gosh
