    Touching up laquer?

Some of the laquer has been coming off the bonet.. my dad tried touching it up but just made it worse

Any suggestions on touching it up? I have a spray bottle of laquer but putting that on doesn't make it look much better.. doesnt fill it in very well.

I think the only thing to do is sand it down and respray. You'll have to paint it first also not just the laquer.

spray can laquer is not the right stuff - probably acrylic, and it will probably soften/go runny when it gets warm too, so you dont want it on your bonnet....
Proper laquer is an epoxy type layer which is baked to set (iirc).

Yeah my dad already made a mess of it anyway. It's mainly came off from stone chippings. I'll try and get some pictures sometime.

The main one looks like bird crap or something.. my dad made a mess trying to sort it out.. spray paint and laquer on the bonet.. luckily my brother managed to use some stuff by AutoGlym which sorted it out (getting the paint off).. took a lot of doing though. grrrr.

The car is in Red, year is 1995.

I was just wondering tho.. spray obviously didn't do the job, isn't there something you can rub in? like a sort of wax or something?

How much are you going to spend on polishes, waxes and paint? £20? £30?

What the likelihood of you making a mess of it you try wet sanding and then spraying?

I reckon you'd be better phoning Dentmaster and getting them to respray the panel. For £65 it will look a hundred times better than trying a DIY job.

    What car is it?

Bright Red (D K R (dogs knob red)) is not normally laquered!

Solid red, blue and white don't get laquer on many brands of car.

Hmmm. £65 is temping, would it actually look the same colour as the rest of the car though? It's in red so obviously it has dulled some because of it's age.

It's a Rover 216 Coupe (1995). In Rover Flame Red.

red is one of the worst colours for fading (or atleast looks worst when it does), but you have a layer of laquer over the top.
Id think it wouldnt be too noticable. It will have aged/faded a little, but if you wax/pollish? the rest of the car (remove the very thin layer of yellowed clearcoat), then it wont look bad.

That said, a can of paint only costs a few quid and you should be able to buy the exact same colour...
If your doing the whole panel it is really not that hard (touching up small areas of a panel however is).. 12 year old car.. shouldnt be spending a lot on paintwork save it for the mot

    You know you want to

Incidentally, I had a 1990H 214GSi as my first car in flame red. I remember a big stone chip on the bonnet which which went through the lacquer and paint to expose metal. The lacquer around the chip bubbled up and start peeling away. That lacquer is pretty thick as well - almost like a piece of slightly brittle plastic film that flakes away if you pick at it. Don't reckon there's anything you can do about it cosmetically to restore it to its original condition without a professional(ish) respray and finish. Also from what I can remember its a different type of finish to what you get on more modern cars - the glossy shine comes from the lacquer itself rather than the clearcoat that you get on more modern paint finishes.
