Using Goodyear eagle F1s? READ THIS - IMPORTANT

Seems there are lots of dodgy tyres around which are illegal. If you're caught by police you could get 3 points PER TYRE.

Put simply, they should say 'made in germany' on the sidewall. If they say 'made in taiwan' it means they're not designed for this country and are illegeal. If they say 'made in china' they're coppies.

You shouldn't get 3 points per tyre, just 3 points for the lot.

    Thanks for the info.

Currently in two minds as to whether to go for the F1 GSD3s or the Toyo Proxes from eTyres.

I think the RTA has been amended a number of times since that original paragraph you quoted in relation to tyres. Don't forget that tread depth wasn't previously endorsable. My understanding is 3 points / £2,500 (maximum fine) for each individual tyre, and in a worst case scenario 12 points / £10,000 (maximum fine).

I'm just wondering, is there an ignorance defence?

Say, if you purchased the tyres from a store, expecting them to be the real deal, but instead, you get knockoffs, where do you stand?

I couldn't find anything newer - that paragraph itself is an amendment to an earlier act (Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988).
Quite a lot of sites on the web say each tyre is a separate offence and you can get points for each, but I can't find any actual legislation to that effect...

Will probably be in a obscure statutory instrument with a very long title

If you think about it, if the aim of the legislation to prevent illegal tyres, it must make sense to be endorsed per tyre. Otherwise someone with 4 bald faulty tyres that is a big risk to the safety of other motorists / pedestrians, would end up with the same endorsement as someone who has 3 legal tyres, and 1 at 1.5mm. That doesn't seem consistent with Government policy on road safety which has become far stricter.

    Anyway I had a Google:-

'Apart from the safety aspect of looking after your tyres, most people are not aware that the maximum penalty for an illegal tyre is a £2500 fine and three penalty points on your licence. If you are unaware that you have four illegal tyres on your vehicle, potentially you could be facing a fine of around £10,000 and a ban from driving.'
    http://www.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=6929

In the case of any vehicle, except goods vehicles and vehicles adapted to carry more than eight passengers, for every offence there is a fine at level 4 of the standard scale with discretionary disqualification and compulsory driving licence endorsement with 3 penalty points. Level 4 is currently £2500 and each faulty tyre is considered as a separate offence. Two faulty tyres equals £5000.
    http://www.ianbrowntyres.co.uk/info.html#penalties

The penalties for having illegal tyres are currently up to a £2500 fine and 3 penalty points PER TYRE!

I knew someone when I was at college (around '92) who got caught with 3 bald tyres and got 9 points.

I've heard of it happening to people - doesn't mean it should. If there's nothing that supercedes the RTA 1991, then you could contest the points in court and get it reduced to 3.
