Yeh just heard from someone saying they cant put the diesel nozzle in a petrol car, does it do more damage to a petrol engine then?

That telegraph article says people are working on using cameras to check the number plates of cars, check that against the dvla database and then lock the pump they shouldnt use

The changing the shape/size would work, you could just make a small adaptor thing thats either available at petrol station or people carry around for older cars.

Sorry, but on a modern diesel this is potentially an engine write off. On older diesels you'd get away with it, but a modern common rail diesel? The engine's toast if you've driven on it.

Even on an older diesel it can be a write off. The detonation alone is often enough to completely destroy the engine.

I think the most simple solution would be maybe an audio alert when you pick up the nozzle. A recorded voice simply stating 'please be aware you have selected the petrol/diesel nozzle'

Or even having to press a button on the pump to comfirm your fuel choice.

It's not to do with people not knowing what the nozzle is, they just out of habbit reach for the green/unleaded pump. I've only ever driven one deisel and you we're always aware it was a deisel when driving it so I never had the problem of forgetting, but most people just need a prod to remind them before they fill up.

Exactly, first ever diesel ive driven and I'd just driven from Manchester to south wales, I just wanted to get home tbh.

The colour coding didnt really work, specially seen as tank cap was green.

Will burnt tree or my organisation be covered? Whos gonna have to pay?

Petrol will be worse in a deisel, since it can detonate and the fuel pump is usually lubricated by the fuel (not in petrol pumps, since they are much smaller lower pressure ones)

If you put deisel in a petrol, it shouldnt cause any damage atall - just needs to be drained and maybe a new fuel filter*. Diesel is like oil, and plenty of cars are happy to burn oil (mine included )

Bang on apart from the detonate bit as thats how a diesel works

Apart from later PD/Piezo VAG diesels funny enough (people will sigh at the mere mention of VAG lol), you can get away with it.

The point eing petrol is more explosive, and thus detonates too soon.

A detonating diesel engine is a very short lived diesel engine. They do not work by detonation, they work by compression ignition. These are 2 different things that often confuse people.

Detonation is a proper explosion, often with multiple flame fronts and results in massive pressure spikes and an increase in temperature compared to normal combustion.
It can be caused by incorrect ignition timing, excessive compression or compression ignition amongst other things.
Normal combustion in a petrol or diesel engine is more akin to the fuel burning - just very fast.

Well I've seen a few diesel engines destroyed by putting petrol in them - in fact they were all ancient mechanically injected ones
