    MX5 inusrance

OK, so another thread about the MX5....

    I think I've found one.

    But.

    Insurance

    Anybody got any tips.

    I'm:

20 (6 months till the magic age of 21 )
Would be looking to use it for less than 5000 miles/year
It would be my second car
I passed my IAM advanced driving test last year (I'm also a committee member of the local group)

I'm not sure how my NCB works out because I drive my car on a lease hire scheme that includes company wide insurance. I had to make a theft claim in september - but I've heard that some claims won't affect your NCB. If this is the case; which insurers are likely to accept NCB from a company policy.

Any suggestions welcome - I tried a quick web quote which said £1005 - is this reasonable for a car that isn't going to get used a lot

dont think that you'll get any ncb from company car insurance mate.

if you're gonna be doing looow milage then consider 'show car' insurance - you're more limited (maybe 2.5k) but its ultra cheap - about £2-300 iirc

sometimes you can get some NCB with a letter from your fleet manager , but not all insurers will accept it. Shop around and see what you find.

OMG.... the population of MX5's drivers on HEXUS is scary!!

I wonder when we have a dedicated MX5 forum. Moderators... Dave, Horsegunner and Angus.

Normally you will get an 'Introductory Discount' for having so many years of company car insurance.

Only looking at the moment - hence the insurance thread.

Don't really want to pay too much for a car that I'm not going to drive all the time.

Although I know the MG would get left at home quite often

Get an MG midget instead... Uber cheap insurance. I pay around £200 which is fine as a second car. Get a 74 or earlier and Road Tax is free too.

elephant.co.uk looks the best so far; I've also been looking at Suzuki Cappuccinos - Elephant were the only people to quote less than a grand fully comp -everybody else wanted £2500 eek!

or... spend the same money (£2k) on a newer, more reliable, more fun, less leaky, more practical car that anyone over 4 foot 6 can drive!!!

I'm guessing you mean an mx5 james?

insurance costs 5 times as much (if i could get insurance for £200), I'm not much over 4'6" so wouldn't have a problem there.

can't see that it's much more practical.

free road tax. definitely a bonus.

Midgets are excellent fun... Even more so when it has approx 100bhp (which it should do when it reemerges in the spring). Admittedly the handerling on a standard suspension setup car can be a bit vauge, but this can soon be rectifed with some £40 bushes. I use mine all the time in the summer, I only don't use it in the winter because mine is a gleaming example and I would rather not risk the salt. Mine doesn't leak at all really.... not unless you are driving in terentual rain with the wind blowing it into hard. Certainly no reliablitiy problems yet. There is little to go wrong, when it does it's usually a nigglerly problem that costs peanuts to fix. I am nearly 6ft and I fit in fine. It's only fat bastards and people who don't have the seat all the way bak that can't.

I only mentioned it because they are VERY cheap cars to run.

    Insurance next to nothing
    No Road Tax
Good Fuel Consumption (Providing it ain't leaking it )
All parts avalible off the shelf for peanuts
    Servicing costs peanuts.

I think they make an excellent second fun car. You also get alot of attention driving it. (For various reasons) If a midget is too small MGB's are avalible for similar money.

Some pictures of various models here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/philip.hawkey/index.htm

Have a look at the BBS at www.mgcars.org.uk the forums and archive are an excellent source of infomation.
