Well they do have a nickname of 'Ford Takeaways' don't they?

It was a combination of commonness plus dire security (and it persists in some regards - remember the transit van episode of Top Gear? ). Main thing though as you say is that it's still relatively cheap to insure.

Fabia is a nice car though

A skoda Fabia is only group 5 insurance (well, if you get the Elegance - lower group as it has immobiliser and alarm). If you want a cheaper insurance quote for a skoda join Briskoda and then phone chris knott insurance brokers who give special rates to briskoda members. You'll probably find they're quite a bit cheaper than elsewhere.

Anyways get a TDI rather than an SDI if you go for one, but for a first car I would say get something a bit cheaper you can then get saving for a VRS model when you have a couple of years no claims They should be a bit lower in price as well as the fabia II is just out and will no doubt start to affect prices in 6-12 months.
