    *another* golf thread

    sorry about this guys

was just looking around the vw site and i noticed the specs for the new golf were up, so i thought i'd have a peak. i was bloody shocked to find the specs of the 2litre diesel.. 0-60 in 16.7 seconds!! i know anyone who buys a non-turbo'd diesel isnt going for speed but that'd struggle to keep up at times in todays traffic.. i cant imagine who would want such a thing..

    http://www.vw.co.uk/new_cars/new_gol...k&engine_id=59

    shocking..

similarly supprising - the current fastest there (the new 'gti') is only 8.9 seconds to 60, which is by no means quick on todays terms. iirc they're going to be bringing out faster versions but i've heard the chassis isnt great and the drive sloppy - is this the end of the golf as a drivers car?

which isnt going to be sold any more. cos they're discontinuing it. cos of the new golf.

this isnt a dig at current golfs its simply stating fact, that the new golf has a hiddeously slow engine as one of the options. ive read in several places that were previewing the new golf that it has a sloppy ride, and wasnt anywhere near as good a drivers car as the current focus. perhaps they tweaked the final version.

that the new golf has a hiddeously slow engine
a non turbo family car 150bhp.

    its not a GTI...

the proper GTI will have 200bhp Turbo charged engine and they'll most likely "up" that later in 2005 to about 225bhp ... by then the V6 will be out probably giving out around 250Bhp and then the R36 with the DSG paddle shifters.

the current "slow" GTI which has 115bhp and uses a 2.0 8v engine does 0-60mph in 10.5secs

THIS slow GTI uses a 150bhp engine (probably 20v not sure) FSI engine and does 0-60mph in 8.9secs

    Thats much better imo.

Just waiting for the proper version...

not really impressed.... my little 1.6 16v in my megane does 0-60 in about 9.6 seconds! The GTI was always an awesome mean machine! It's lacking its sparkle these days. They should take a look at the Mk1 again and see where they went wrong!

lol its a non turbo weasel what are you expecting?all the time people say how bad handling mk3 and mk4's are...the mk3 chassis is basically a mk2 and the mk4 isnt far off but the dampers, springs ant-roll bars etc are set up for comfort not full on handling but all this can of course be changed for stiffer uprated gear while still retaining some progressiveness.i expect the mk5 will be the same despite it being a new floorpan.

the new gti's are designed to be comfortable reliable sporty motorway-cruisers which they do superbly...but if you want it to be a race machine it can be,its just going to cost you a bit more, some people wont want to do this but thats there loss.

i thought somebody said to call it a day on all the veedub bashing?

i wasnt trying to bash them, i was just shocked anyone would actually manage to sell a car that slow these days..

the power on the new ones isnt really such an issue - its more the fact they're so damn heavy.. incidentally vdub also sell a loopy loopo with a <50bhp engine.. cant imagine thats much fun on an mway (lupo gti is still lush thou)

Times have changed mate, if you live in london are you gonna want good 0-60 times for a shopping run? your gonna want decent fuel economy and saftey, there's a bigger market for slower more efficient cars now as most familys can have 2.
