    Hunt the E500!

headbrace's T5 enquiries got me thinking about Q-cars again and just how much cash is needed for one of the greatest Q-cars of all time, the W124 E500?

Now for those of you who don't know a Q-car is a wolf-in-sheeps-clothing affair that occasionally sneaks out of manufacturers showrooms and into the wild.
The affore mentioned Volvo 850/V70 T5 was a classic example, powerfull motor and tidy handling in an estate car package.

Now the W124 E500 is just such a motor. We're talking a 375bhp in a late eighties Merc with slightly flared front arches. That's it, no other major cosmetic changes just bigger arches.
All else you really need to know is that Merc shipped them to Porsche for the 'upgrades' where they took days to rebuild. I was lucky enough to visit the factory as they were being built and when I peered through a smoked out window and could just see these sinister wagons inside. I asked our guide what they were and he looked deeply uncomfortable before ushering us along (just as Audi RS2's we're being shuttled past!).

N e way. Can you find one for sale?

I've not yet BUT just happened to come across this little beauty along the way

You are much more likely to find one in Germany because of the very few left hookers over here. Especially for a rare car like that. Its easy to drive them over here with new EU happy family too so might be worth a trawl on the German version of Autotrader.

Also owners club might be worth a look...but that would take longer.

What might help your search is if you look for the correct car. The E's of that time were 500E's and not E500's. It was before the whole C class and badge change over. But yes they are a fantastic car, my Dad had an old 300E 24 Valve (same shape as the 500 we are on about) and that was hewn from granite and went like stink, was also very very rare in its day, most only had the 300E if they had the 3 litre version.

As for the old 190's the 2.6 was also a wolf in sheeps clothing (Dad had one after the 300E) not quite as raucous as the Cossie's but a fantastic motor all the same.

My personal Merc Q car would be a C36, or an old 500SEC.

    Edit: Found one

My appologies, you are of course quite correct, please forgive my terrible memory!

    What a tidy find too!
I really wasn't sure how much they'd fetch but that's one big hunk of teutonic stealth

'Ere Moby I see where you're coming from there. Zak maybe right but I suspect you and I are both thinking Taxi a la 406!

I did spot some Cossie's anything from £2k with park one on the drive and £6k with less than 100k miles. Thing is they've got too many add-ons to be a Q-car and not enough to be an EVO2

Went to, said I would have it, went to sort cash and he sold it in the mean time. Grrrrrrrr. Still looking but they are rare, especially to find an unmolested one.
