Car Tax Costs

Does car tax vary depending what size engine etc you have?

I thought car tax was a standard cost across the board, but I just went to apply online and its £30 more than it was last time I got tax. I upgraded from a 1.4 Golf to a 1.8 Toyota Celica.

The rules have changed and car tax is based on CO2 emissions for modern cars (2001 onwards I believe - but don't quote me on this!) and on engine size for older cars. Car tax also increased in the budget, with a greater increase on more polluting cars (new 4x4s for example).

I guess that it must be sub £70 for up to 1.6 or something?

Damn it as if I wasnt skint enough having to pay more for car tax is annoying! Just hope they dont bring in this pay as you drive thing as it could get even worse!

For cars registered before 2001, it costs £115 a year for 1.5L and below engines, and £180 for anything bigger, which is why it's good to buy older cars if you want a huge engine as it costs the same as a 1.6 Focus to tax

Nevermind Ben, your car tax costs as mich as mine does, but now that I've had a 1.8 I wouldn't want to go back to something smaller.

£185 for mine. I was always pissed off about being 47cc too much for £115 tax. Cant say Im not getting my moneys worth though, big blue clouds behind me at 5k rpm... and I cant say this tax banding hasnt made me not care about how blue the air gets.. after all teh sky is blue...............

1 liter of oil into the air per fortnight* (108ppm on the last mot - up from ~20ppm a few years ago!, max 200 to pass! long way to go yet!)
