Place a big stick against the starter motor and take a hammer to the other end. Give it a couple of firm (not silly) blows and try again.
Best to get someone to try and start it while to carryout this proceedure.
Don't hit it too hard as I don't know how well attached it will be in an AX!
The aim is too loosen-up the motor (bushes etc) and 'knock' the solenoid back into action.
If you do end up needing a new starter motor first check the local scrapyard. Recently a relative had a similar problem, he went to the scrappy and they changed the bushes and stator of him for £40. A scrapped one would have been £90!

they are not that much from the scrappie?
not sure about hitting it. However its quite easy to take out on my ford and a good test is to take battery out of car and connect it up on a bench (you can test if its the motor or solenoid).
They are quite easy to take apart and fix too (i did on my spare orion one, still works), though I would assume you need to buy some replacement brushes if that is the cause.
It may also be the wiring, if it has corroded or just broken from viabrations. If the starter works fine then check resistance of the wires and make sure none are lose.
