Anyone buy and use part worn tyres?

I'm needing a pair of 17" tyres fairly soon, maybe in the next couple of months, and I asked at a place that does part-worns, and they do them for £30, £35, and £40 depending how much tread is left, and they can often get matched pairs...

Does anyone else use part-worns? Ever had any problems?

I've just got a part worn (175/70/13) for the home2rome rally and it was £15! pretty good prices if you ask me! And that includes fitting etc.

I have no experience with part-worns sorry.

But Home2Rome looks like a laugh, think me and some mates are planning to do it either next year or year after, or Staples2Naples.

Is it not a bit sketchy as you could be using knock off crap tyres....

The one's I got today are part worn Continental tyres, they look pretty good.

For my car I need 225/45/17

For a car which is going to be doing high speed motorway stuff I'd never risk it - unless you are on a VERY low budget... seriously that A4 piece of paper connection to the road is more important than a few quid Remember -safety first! There is a reason why they are no longer on someone elses motor....

I've used them before, in fact I always used to buy them. It just depends on how much of a gypsy you want to be really, it's a hassle trying to find the right size, to match tread wear and you car *will * look rubbish with odd tyres on each wheel but if you can live with that they are fine. I understand most part worns come from Germany, where it is illegal to repair punctures so what happens is punctured but otherwise newish tyres are shipped over here for repair and then sold on.

£20 is a more realistic price for part worn 17"s though, so do haggle. You should always haggle when buying tyres, I tend to get ~20 - 30% off per corner buying new branded tyres

Re: Anyone buy and use part worn tyres?

I would much rather have a uber budget £25 per corner NEW tyre, than some dodgy old part worn tyre. think my wheels are 14" but I doubt you will find any that cheap in 17's.... maybe £30-35.

That said make sure they are fitted properly by somone that knows what they are doing and any issues with safety should be noticed (esp if they have been puncture repairs!).

could look on ebay? i managed to get 4 alloys with tyres for £50 - although only two tyres are any good (and one of those was slightly damaged when garage bloke took it off, but he said its still safe to use) and the alloys have bad corrosion which im trying to clean up.

Actually I'd say the opposite. A part worn F1 is going to be a LOT safer than a wang-linlong-nankyang ditchfinder special.

Re: Anyone buy and use part worn tyres?

Part worn? Not for me. There are too many potential issues with what's been done to them before they got me, and not all types of damage would show.

My attitude is that the tyres are an important part, probably the most important part, of keeping my car on the road and able to stop when I need it to. I'm not prepared to put that at risk for the money saved. It's my life, that of my family and that other other road users and pedestrians at risk.

But then again, a lot of part-worns are no doubt in good condition with no faults other than the obvious wear and, if so, are no worse than driving around with tyres that are part worn because I've worn them myself. They can be a good value purchase, and if it's the difference between being able to afford to keep the car on the road and not, then .....

All I would say is that if buying part-worns, be VERY careful about what you buy, and from whom, and check them out VERY carefully.

    Its not worth risking it.

Tyres are not that expensive, and if you cant afford them then ditch the 17s

I'll probably try National as they seem to be doing buy one get one free on Barum (continental), and AVON tyres. Although it doesn't seem to apply on their website...

I might try costco as well as they do good prices on michelins
