That, is fantastic. Who's done the job Zak?
Zak,
Couple of questions?
Did you use CDS tubing? and
Why didn’t you extend past the rear turret - I would have thought it would have been structurally stronger to extend past, but also pick up on the rear turrets - instead of stopping on them?
Just interested - can you tell whos been reading his FIA book
Looks damn nice though – me’s jealous now
CDS tubing......errr....dunno
Its not the lightweight stuff sadly...
I got the cage from Custom Cages...was designed for my Astra Mk3 and the bloke who did fitted it for me suggested this make cos he uses them on his own Vauxhalls. In bits (rounded ends, perfect cut to fit tubes and brackets to pillars supplied) £570
The person involved was Donald Fowler, who has a bodyshop in Oxfordshire...I know him from Motorclub and he builds FINE FINE cars....his own Corsa is currently just shy of 290bhp....2litre Vauxhall. He really does do some amazing work.
And I am lucky enough to be able to ask him to help with this stuff.
Dave (who's workshop it is now in, he's the bloke I co-drive for) is now waiting patiently for the stuff I ordered today.
2 Sparco Rev seats (red...natch)
2 sets of Alloy seat mounts (how much were THOSE )
2 sets of 6 point harnesses (TRS)
4.25 litre mechanical activation (pull cable) Extinguisher
hand held extinguisher
Foot brace (for holding self still in co-drivers seat)
New helmet for Dave (biggest head in world) Sparco "Pilot"
4 bonnet pins
Intercomm and two headsets (Terra trip..couldn't justify Peltor cost )
Electrics "Cut off" switch and cable
Suede Rally Steering Wheel (3 spoke)
Steering wheel boss
I am now £1270 lighter again

I was MORE suprised that I dont need a strut brace !
Apparnently, and these people know more than me, that with the triangulation of the down struts on the front and with the full width "behind the dashboard" strut that goes left to right (now sadly covered) I dont need one!
I'm now out of my league
which is OK cos when I'm IN my own depth I worry, but when I dont know, I just dont care and get on with it quicker

I can't wait for this project to get started... it's gonna be one mean bad ass of a rally car..
I hope you do it justice and win summit
I've never been so excited to see a roll cage in a bare car in all my life!!
CDS = Cold Drawn Seamless tube i.e. its not rolled together, but is one complete tube, much stronger than normal tubing and doesnt have the tendancy to split if you crash..... have had to replace a few tubes on my cage as they werent to std.... more money...
The left/right diagonal tube adds a lot to the structural rigidity, with mine if you jack one side, the other follows, instead of bending!!
Cant wait to see this finished - should be a real beast
Strut brace? last thing you need now! That shell is gonna be about as flexible as my companies approach to pay rises!Originally Posted by Zak33
Little bit surprised the rear cage doesn't pick up on the rear suspension turrets, but a vaguely remember something in the blue book about it being a no no. Also a little surprised at the door bars - Thought cage designers were going for easier access with the same sorts of stiffness.
Overall though, tis mightly impressive
Cross bars on doors are normally for 3 doors (like mine)
and other designs for 4 or 5 doors cos the door apperture is smaller
