I may have the opportunity to Marshall a rally stage later this year.
What is required and what advice do you have?

Eyes, ears.
Getting off the road before the rally car hits you is generally good, watch out for numpties throwing things on the road too.
Don't stand between the road and anything solid, don't turn your back on the track. Wear about 8 layers.
a little advice....just do it, with qa flask of tea and lots of sarnies
They;'ll give you a tabbard, and tell you what to do, where to stand etc.
And the one piece of advice that isn't so obvious.... DONT PULL THE EXTINGUISHER on a crashed car unless it is ON FIRE or looking like it might go up (fuel everywhere etc). So very very few cars catch fire, and pulling the extinugisher on a smacked up rally car, will
A: ruin the throttle bodies/carbs
B: empty the bottle, needing a recharge
C: get a very stressed rally driver/co driver looking to smack you upside the head
It's been done to me, and I had to hold the driver back from pummeling all the marshalls...and a 6' angry, super-hyped, adrehaline charge bloke in a helmet and overalls, who's just seen the sky, the floor, the sky...the floor, 3 or 4 times, in under a second, with bruised shoulders is dead hard to slow up.

Zak from your first-hand experience can I assume a key part of a Marshall's gear is a decent pair of running shoes .... and maybe some body armour?

Yes an escape route is essential for many reasons, not least of which a good crash helmet can break your head open quite easily
